Can anyone tell me whether the Broken Hill - Menindee - Wilcannia road(s) are sealed? Also what's the feel these days about Wilcannia for tourists?
Thanks.

Hi BartN.

The roads from Broken Hill to Menindee, and Broken Hill To Wilcannia are sealed , but from Menindee to Wilcannia is dirt, good in dry weather, but can become a hand full in wet weather, we did it last August (2011) from Menindee to Wilcannia along the east side, it was dry and good.

What is the situation in Wilcannia for tourists? I have never stayed there, and I would not choose to, but they say its OK if you stay in a caravan park..

Cheers

Rob

BH to Menindee is first class seal - from there to Wilcannia is unsealed (roads both sides of the river). Check on road status first - not funny after rain. Visiting Wilcannia ? In my view, middle of the day is quite ok - lot of interesting historic buildings there - would have been a bustling, very important river town in the 'old days' - seems nobody would want to be there after dark now though ! Funny town, in that normal 'services' seem to exist in odd places - such as, roads info is best obtained at the Westpac bank (not the Tourist info office) !! And the only supermarket recently closed leaving the town with no food supplies at all ! Might be open again - haven't heard. As for fuel - a huge difference between prices from the main street (Barrier Hwy) outlet to the other outlet in a backstreet (just off Reid Street I think).

I think the caravan park is closed due to a high river.
It maybe worthwhile checking.

cheers

Hi bartn
Last week i towed my 3.5 ton van from broken hill to Menindee, out to the main weir, dirt road a bit corrugated to the wier but caravan city out there. Spent 3 nights out there, then towed down to Pooncarie on the dirt. Best i have ever seen it, 3 nights there, Road like a highway. Last 20 k into Pooncarie a bit potholed but still good. All sealed roads are good in that area. Watch out for emus, they got no respect for cars. cheers mm

Sorry can't help with current road conditions nearly 2 years since we travelled that way, but we were told they lock you in the caravan park at Wilcannia at night.
