Hi guys/gals
Has anyone travelled the ABH in December?
Due to kids in school and the wife being a teacher we have to do it at this time of year.
Only issue I can see so far will be heat but any other info people have would be great.
Cheers
Chris

Hi Chris,
Not quite December but I have driven the section of the ABH from Mable Creek to
Neale Junction from Jan 1 to Jan 3 2006.
It was unseasonally rainy, and very very very wet.
Normally it would be hot and stinking, however as long as you carry plenty of water and have a
well serviced vehicle it should be OK.

Extremely rough with plenty of corrugations the last couple of years. We have experienced broken
suspension bits and a steering rack failure on one vehicle and that's driving it carefully with really low tyre pressues
As you will need a permit from
Woomera I suggest you
check and see if they are actually prepared to issue on at that time of the year
As per other comments the weather at that time of the year can be quite unpredictable with a good chance of tropical rain

The latest we've done it was end of October - had a heatwave go through - 45 degrees in the shade for 5 days straight. We just kept driving to stay cool.

Hi Chris
I have not driven it at that time of the year, but it would be very hot.
The only issue that there could be is fuel........
When I last rang Ilkurlka, the managers were now based at the Aboriginal Community and it was being run by volunteers and I was told that they close down during the hotter months when there is very little traffic out that way. It may be all talk, but as you do, I would give them a call in advance to confirm if it is true and will they be open.
Ilkurlka Phone Number 08 - 9037 1147
Apart from the heat at that time of the year, it is a great drive.
Cheers
Stephen
