G'day "H",

we did the Tanami Rd a couple of weeks ago and didn't see any camels.

We went over west by the Gary Junction Rd and saw about a dozen live camels and four, or five , dead ones, plus about a million camel tracks.

We heard on Maccas show, two weeks ago, there are over a million feral camels in Australia.

Here's alink to some facts - camel fact sheet

Maybe the Tanami is a bit busy for them. We must have passed a dozen vehicles before Yuendumu.

It seems like you'll come across more camels south of there. Saying that, there's a lot of desert for them to roam about in. They wouldn't need to hang around the roads.

Hoo roo,
Steve.

There are plenty of them North of the Tanami too.....probably more south but when you get off the road a bit you come across a few.

We didn't see camels on the Tanami either, but they were in plague proportions on the Great Central Road and also lots on the Gary Junction Road. They will step out straight in front of a vehicle and stop, or amble up the road in front of you to slow you to a crawl. They have done so much damage to the environment.

Yeah.......there are still heaps around. There has been a culling program but it is all a bit controversial.....

Just 2 weeks ago a vehicle hit one on the highway between Caiguna and Balladonia.

Another motorist had to dong it on the head with a hammer to put it out of its misery.

So they are closer to home than the Tanami.
