I noticed a whining coming from the gearbox only in 3rd gear only, none of the others for the past 10 days and today she just got stuck in 3rd.
Any suggestions and how easy/difficult a fix this is?
The ute is my everything vehicle and sole means of transport here on the farm so am stuck at home deciding what to do.
Any help appreciated.

Hi Michael,

Well I'm no transmission expert, but it could possibly be-

1. Synchro hub assembly worn out
2. Selector fork/shaft broken
3. Worn bearings
4. Excessive shaft end float

You mention whining - how many km's on the clock? Might be up for a gearbox rebuild.

Maybe someone can provide more optimistic (or accurate!) information than me lol.

Cheers,

Tim.

Thanks Tim
It has just done 200k Kim's. The whining only for the last 10 days. Happened so quickly

At 200Ks i would suspect bearings. Drain oil from box & check for metal & posibly bearing balls, most courier drain plugs had magnets on them. If you want long life out of a gearbox then regular oil changes are the order of the day. (my exp as as an X Ford mechanic in a country dealership) lots of farmers here have Couriers.

My son's mazda bravo gear box did a similar thing. He managed to order a low kilometer jap import one from a wrecker in Queensland delivered to his door at half the price of a rebuild earlier this year. I will have to get back to you on where and who.

I contacted my son.

http://www.gearboxengine.com.au/

The wreckers were pretty good to deal with. These are second hand low km imports. The first one sent had a whine so we sent it back at their expense and they posted another one, perfect condition. So unlucky we got a dud one but an honourable business to deal with.

Hope that helps.
