Just bought our new retreat keppel caravan and now need to get it insured, who is the better insurer, the prices vary quite a bit and just wondering if there is any benifit in going with the dearer insurer or if the cheaper one are just as good. If anyone has any advice we would appreciate any help. When reading the booklets they confuse you with mumbo jumbo and dont give any clear description of what is exactly you are covered for, you find out at the critical time that there was an hidden exclusion that didnt cover certain things when you thought you were covered. As i said any good or bad experiences would be appreciated. thanks all

Hi Brian
Try the NRMA it is not the cheapest but I have over the years 2 write offs due to roll overs and one due to the caravan been stolen.
Paid within days on all occasions no problems.
You have a good Caravan in RETREAT.
Regards
Ted

As often seen here and elsewhere, shopping around will often produce surprising savings, because the insurers are' tricky people' and play all sorts of devious games to win business.
Many of the quotes don't make sense, but then, we are not the tricky ones :-o). CIL were good to us at the start but have dumped them because we saved elsewhere (SGIC) - doesn't figure to me, but their choice. As for policy detail - phone and ask for a copy of the policy or a web document - they can't sell you insurance without you having every detail prior, if requested. Agreed that assurances provided in a quote on the phone are worthless - you need to see it in writing.

We used SGIC for CT and various other insurance, no claims though so can't comment how they deal with them. Their policy cover seemed comprehensive for all our requirements.
Unfortunately had to swap as they don't trade in QLD. NRMA are their partners and I've had to request for them to stop ringing me as I'd had a call every week to try to sell me a new product!

Forgot to say.....sage advice heard years back - "you have to make a claim of course, to find out if your insurance policy is really any good" (but who wants to do that ? :-o)

As we were full time on-road at the time (2005) apart from CMCA my insurer of 34 years AAMI and most others would/could not supply us with extra contents ($10,000+) we went with Caravaners Complete Insurance. They matched my old insurers figures for vehicle and caravan insurance plus the extra for the contents.
This contents even covers Fusion Insurance on electric motors up to 15 years old. I have had a Danfoss Compressor replaced as
well as a
water damaged Mobile phone replaced. the vehicle also gets a free Windscreen a year if damaged.
There are more extras available so check out their site and give them a free landline 1800 069199 call for further information.
Cheers Kev.

We ended up insuring the CT with CIL over NRMA who has nearly all our insurances. I put a scenario to both of them being that if the CT was damaged in WA (we are in NSW) what would happen?
NRMA said that they provide a tow to the nearest repairer for repairs, so I said as it is a CT manufactured in SA the wait for repairs may be a considerable time frame and if this was the case we would have to return to NSW to resume work without the CT. I then asked how would the CT would be returned to us on completion of the repairs and the response was that NRMA only pays for one tow so I said which tow would they provide in which the reply was they would make that decision on a case by case nature (I know which one they would take).
The summary of this conversation was that we would have to go back to WA to pick it up or more probably freight it back, either way it would be at our own expense.
I contacted CIL put the same scenario to them and they said it would be towed, repaired and delivered back to where we want it. SOLD.
In approx a $500.00 premium CIL were $30.00 more expensive than NRMA.
We have since made a small claim on our CT after our cape trip and CIL were great with only photos required to assess the damage. They only required a bit of reminding to keep the claim rolling along but otherwise a 9 out of 10.
Cheers
Mal
