I am talking to a mechanic about installing a turbo charger (with intercooler) and it seems that the 1HZ kit might fit the 1PZ motor.
Has anyone done this or know of anyone who has tried?

FYI, the 1PZ is an inline 5 cylinder 3.5L engine.

I don't know of anyone that has done the conversion but apart of the physical fitting of the turbo to the exhaust manifold and the connection to the inlet, or in this case the intercooler, the other factor that may need to be considered is the amount of "turbo lag".
The turbo may need A/R and compressor wheel mods because of the reduced gas flow from a smaller capacity engine.

Looks like Denco has a kit for them, and most the components look the same as for the 1HZ kit, except maybe for a 'one cylinder manifold adapter' here is a link to the fitting instructions. Denco PDF

Thanks mate, I will pass this on for the mechanic to look at. They specialise in Turbo installs (for high performance cars as well as 4x4s).

From experience, I myself would be looking at just bolting in a complete engine instead of playing with a 1PZ if they do not already come standard with a turbo.
There is much more to a turbo engine than what you can see externally, the pistons and rods for a start are different to handle the higher temps, radiators may different due to the extra heat of the turbo engine and it goes on and on.
You will also need to check out your 1PZ exhaust system, is it the same as the 1HZ ?
You will need a free flowing system or it will sound like a vacuum cleaner with about the same power as my Dyson cleaner and create too much heat.
Is your transmission able to handle the extra torque ?
Do some legwork/googling and price up a complete unit from front to back or a complete Tojo wreck to swap it all out and you can do it yourself then saving a heap.
Its not going to be cheap despite what "a mechanic" told you and remember you are paying him around $100 an hour to try all this out with no guarantee.
Yes I am a Diesel Mechanic with more decades behind me than in front of me.

There is a turbo kit which helps. The mechanic I have gone to specialises in turbo installs. He has said that once he does some testing of the engine, if he doesn't think it will hold up, we won't do it.

If it can, we will be installing an inter-cooler as well as a new exhaust system (custom made for the new configuration).

In terms of the transmission, he is going to find out if it's the same as the 1HZ, which means it should be able to take the higher torque output of the turbo. but we will have to see.

Thanks for the suggestion of a "new" engine, as a back up I am going to start looking around for a 1HZ or turbo'd 1PZ.

In terms of the cost, he has told us it will cost a lot. But we love this car. And we would prefer to upgrade the engine, than buy a new car. It has taken us all over the kimberley region, and from one corner of the country to another. It just struggles towing a camper trailer.
