Hi all
Just a quick question on anybody that has installed a lift on their R50 Pathfinder.
We are set on King Springs but just querying what shocks folks have used in their vehicles and their opinion on them?
So far have been recommended Tough Dog or KYB however I am pretty sure EFS do a shock as
well.
Regards
Scott

A few years ago I had an R50 with a tough dog lift.
I asked for a "comfort" type spring but it was still way too stiff. Maybe they gave me the heavy duty version instead.
Anyway, it was fine except for being too stiff/hard when no load in the back.

I haven't lifted an R50 but have some things to consider.
Because it is IFS then the amount of lift probably won't be more than a percentage of the available droop of the
suspension and seeing you can't go more than that without major mods the OE shockers will be travelling/extending to the same amount as any expensive after market ones will be asked to do. If the OE work and are reasonable quality they possibly will be close to or as good as any replacement unless you get to Bilstein or Koni.
To be legal the amount of drop must retain 1/3 of all wheel travel so the lift won't be huge.
The wheel at rest can't be sitting at more than 66% down of the total travel amount available otherwise you skip and lose road contact over rough roads at speed and loss of control is the item the legality is attempting to regulate. Some kits and fitters don't observe this vital handling aspect. Insurance aspects will apply to this function after an accident.
I always used to like KYB and they might be good but the fronts fitted to the pre 2012 Dmax are totally not suited to the vehicle and give poor performance. Probably doesn't apply to all KYB however.
Check with whoever, and about whatever you buy, if
the springs rates and shocks are matched to each other. They should be able to supply a technical information regarding the testing of the relative suitability of the new/replaced components.
Many can't and don't, they just sell them cos that's wot they do. Just don't blindly believe them because they open their mouth and sprout stuff.
I hope someone has done what you are seeking and can OK certain gear as suitable.
Cheers

I have an R51 with ARB "Old man Emu" complete
suspension. About 45mm lift, not intended but came with the new
suspension. All has been OK. I tow a caravan and has made a differance (in a good way), a little stiff when unloaded but still good.
