Hi there,
I have a 2000 prado with OME
suspension lift. Moderate load capable but with draws, rooftop tent and fully loaded it is pretty weighed down at the back.
Does anyone have any good recommendations how to fix this? Are rear
suspension airbags a good option? Or is it best to change the rear
suspension completely?
Also, any good
places to do it in Alice or should I wait till
Adelaide?
James

Mate not sure but did you have all the gear fitted prior to
suspension going in or you added the adds on after woods ??? With that type of load it should have the heavy duty rear springs, also up front if you have steel bullbar/winch/duel batts etc. I had medium OME in both my 90's and it was spot on BUT I didnt have roof top tent, draws etc but I was chockers when loaded but more luggage bags, weaco fridge.Had steel winch bar up front but no winch did have duel batterys (was told would only need heavy duty up front if I had a winch as
well). Those draws in the rear can be very heavy on their own with out loading them. The only other problem is if you dont have that gear loaded all the time and only when going on holidays then it will ride like a go kart when unloaded which can become very annoying. You can either add some airbags on the rear end which do make a big difference and when unloaded can drop the air in them back down to 5 to 10psi just so they dont get pinched by
the springs or buy yourself another set of heavy duty rear spings and drop them in when loaded and going on holidays, bit of a pain but not that hard to do. Rear shock on passengers side is a prick of a job especially if you have the grande with stability control (
mine did) extra pipes in the way for undoing top shock nut but can be rectified easily by drilling through the rear cargo area floor directly above the rear shock nut then just using a rubber grommet to seal the new hole up (this is done a few installers).......Unless its really annoying you or bottoming out then I would wait till your back home other wise you will possibly pay top $$$ out where you are........

I had the exact same issue with my 01 prado. It had the medium duty
suspension already in it from a previous trip. When I loaded it up with the rooftop and all the gear the @ss end sagged a bit. I took it to a local
suspension bloke who took one look and said airbags and they worked a treat. It lifted the back end up to near where it was and when we got home we backed off the air pressure and it still rand nice and smoothly.

Hi, we have a 06 Prado with air bags, they are the way to go. We were fully loaded with the rooftop and towed a camper with no probs. ( family of 6).
If your looking for something to do around Alice, there is
Chambers Pillar,
Rainbow Valley and Ruby Gap Gorge.

Thanks for the tips!
Spoke to top gear at
Alice springs. They were really helpful.
I'm going to get my rear coils changed to heavy duty 150kg load.
