High Country

We will be travelling to the high country Victoria in our Prado and off road camper trailer. We are on a 3 month trip from Perth and have already done outback SA, and will be returning to Vic after doing Tassie. We have about 3 weeks exploring time to camp and 4wd to see sights in the high country.Any suggestions for where to start, must see places and good bush camping . Prado has high clearance and we are self sufficient (but we are travelling alone).First visit ,so any suggestions would be great. Cheers Mike

Arm yourself with a good map one like the Hema High Country, and use Fry's hut as a base to do day trips or if you can overnighters without the camper.

Once you have seen all you want to see there, move over to Talbotville, and do the same sort of thing there.

Getting around a lot of the High Country with a camper is not all that easy, and you would enjoy it more setting up a base to do your exploring from.

Hi Mike H9,

If the rig you're travelling in is the same as your profile photo, I'd agree with Tony and add a couple of other base camp sites like Sheep Yard Flats (easy road in and out) or Pineapple Flat a little bit more difficult but still OK. Both these camps are in the Mt Buller/Mt Stirling area and give you access to quite a few huts (Craig's, Bindaree, Bluff, Lovicks etc.). If your in the Dargo area (Talbotville)you can access the Wonnangatta River, Crooked River and if you're up for some challenging tracks you could look at Mt Blue Rag Track and Billy Goat Track (both have spectacular views of the high country but are steep in sections and rocky in parts as well).

Get yourself some of the Rooftop maps for the area and you'll be overwhelmed with options and spectacular country. The high country gets very busy during school holidays so I would recommend getting up there before early December if possible.

You'll enjoy the high country, one of my favourite places.

Cheers

Mike we drove through the high country last Christmas and loved it, we took a tent which was much easier than towing through there. As mentioned in a previous post used a rooftop map (Dargo - Howitt Plains)

We went in through Sheepyard flats which is about 20k's off the Mansfield-Mt Bulla Road then took Brocks Road to Mt Howett Carpark.

Drove down Zeka Spur Track into Wonnagatta Station which is a big open flat area on the Wonnagatta River.

From there We travelled out the Wonnagatta Track, Herne Spur Track, Wombat Range Track, Cynthia Range Track & Crooked River Track to Talbotville which is another great camping area on the Crooked River.

From there to Dargo and back into the hills on the Crooked River Road, Billy Goat Bluff Track. Went to the Pinnacles Lookout for a great view of the high country.

From there along the Moroka Road, Mt Howitt Road and back down Brocks Road to Sheepyard Flat .

Was a great round trip with several river crossings and very steep climbs/descent's. Allow yourselves plenty of time and even though it is quite busy at that time of year it is still worth the trip for the great country and the experience.

Yep that's a great trip. Gets my tick of approval.

Recommend that you stop on the Howitt rd & walk into Bryces Gorge too. The round trip walk to Pieman & Conglomerate falls is about 8km. Plenty of flowers out at this time of the year & the falls should have some water in as well. The Gorge carpark is about 5k's on the right past the Howitt plains airstrip.

Mike,
I forgot to mention that if traveling the Howitt rd in addition to Bryces gorge there is a great lookout called Dimmocks Lookout a couple of kms north of the Howitt plains airstrip. Nice views of the gorge to the north & the Alps to the east & south. Good spot for a cuppa or lunch stop as there are some picnic tables here surrounded by wildflowers & great views.
Cheers
