Has any body have this vehicle and towing 3t. What are your
views of it. Can it pull this up decent hills ie the Clyde, Bulli, ect. What is your fuel consumption.
Thanks in advance for your comments

G'day brucer
Recently there has been a fair bit of discussion about this type of vehicle and towing ability.
Many push it to the limit because the maker said it can tow it, so they do.
Madness.
Just because it can physically move it along the ground doesn't mean any great margin of safety is there if things go wrong. That includes climbing, braking and dynamic steering control ability.
A large cooling capacity auto transmission cooler would be essential to ensure temps don't damage the transmission and cause undue heat being delivered to the radiator for dissipation.
Fuel economy will most likely be in balance with physics, to move 5 tons along the road will use about the same amount of fuel unless the vehicle is inherently less efficient. Modern CRD engines are usually programmed for light use and aren't anything special when highly loaded/stressed. They do vary though.
To develop the torque figures the manufactures claim, the engine has to use fuel. Some are more efficient than others at this, just because the torque is high on paper doesn't mean the best for your situation. Dmax seem to do
well economy wise but aren't as powerfull as many others which have smaller engines.
It's the fuel usage while under that load which matters.
It is worth checking with a loaded tandem to try and replicate the situation. Hard to tell which will come out tops.

I get what your saying but the vehicle has a GVM 3100, GCM 6000kg.
My 4.8 is the same. Land Rover has a 2.8 and the same details.
What I was after was information from some one who is currently doing the task that I asked for.
I am a little bit sceptical about this vehicles ability to perform. Tech has over the years and just maybe this vehicle can do what the manufactures claim.

132 kw and 470 nm torque Colorado
vs
147 kw and 470 nm for the
Ranger
Maybe they keep the 'loads more grunt' figures hidden from the rest of us?
Either is going to tow very
well with 470nm, and more importantly both have very flat torque curves with max torque available before 2000 rpm.

I wish with all the reviews of these dual cabs, especially the vw, they would put 3 ton on the back and see how they really perform, i think thats where the v6 navara and 3.2l
ranger would kick arse, the vw would be flat out taking off!

I'd be happy enough just to compare torque curve graphs. Tells all you need to know about towing 3t especially with a twin turbo. The argument hasn't been about cubic inches for years. Like the stupid v8 in 79 cruisers. The 3l 4 cylinder would be perfect for just about everyone I reckon.

I've driven one twice but not towed anything. They drive nice and the motor has been around since about 2006 in Jeep diesel Cherokees and Wranglers apparently but not tuned for the current figures of 470 nm. My son's Cherokee has the motor and it has 400nm on paper. I decided to wait and see how they go. Being an early adopter can be expensive. The gearbox is an unknown at this stage.
