Prado suspension upgrade

I recently had the springs and shocks replaced with Pedders gear on my 2002 Prado. I now find the steering tends to wander and generally feels vague. I have taken it back for an alignment but it didn't fix the problem. I guess I'll take it to another shop but before I do, does anyone have any suggestions as to the cause?

Hi Fester,

My 07 Prado has been lifted 50 mm with OME suspension, heavier springs all round and Tough dog shocks. It rides beautifully, take your hands off the wheel and it doesn't move.
Sorry no idea what might be wrong with yours.

I had much the same done to our Prado as Fester did but we put airbags on the back as well.
Ride unloaded was a bit choppy but with a set of camping gear and full tanks it rode really well.
No wandering and straight as.

If the vehicle is std height now or even if it has been lifted the so called alignment should ensure the caster angle is sufficient whatever the ride height.
Did Pedders fit the gear or did someone else? No matter who, they should be able to give you the caster reading in degrees so you know it is within the specs set for the vehicle and also equal within a tolerance.
The "caster" means, a line through the axis of the steering/suspension ball joints should point at a position/distance infront of the centre of the tyre at the road surface.

If it isn't enough it will cause dancy/floaty steering.

They should have road tested it before giving it to you and if like that it should have been rectified before finishing the job.
If done properly, a road test shouldn't reveal anything wrong because the alignment is as it should be.
Note, not many people in aligning workshops really know about aligning and often don't detect incorrect situations and sometimes don't know how to correct it. They just work to what a machine says, no basic understanding at all.

The caster should be around 3 degrees to 3 1/2 degrees.

When I raised my 2002 Prado it definately needed a proper wheel alignment, by a proper wheel alignment shop.

Mine was done from about day 10 from new so that is going back some time now!

The steering was fine from then on.
