G'day,
Anyone own one? Whats your thoughts? I notice in their literature, it states some transit bags can't be used? I've a 40 litre Engel, does the bag issue apply to this fridge? Also.... Does anyone know where/who does a better price than commonly seen?
Cheers,
Wazza.

Wazza these slides are so good, the make
camp life easy having the fridge at a level that is usable.
Mine sits east / west in my pod and the latch system couldn't cope with the extra forces applied, they supplied an upgraded version of the latch free.
Had a nut come off the mechanism, loctite could have fixed it bit I drilled and tie-wired it, no more issues.
Pricey, but aren't they all?
Cheers

I also have a 40 litre Engel and have had a drop slide for a few months now, but yet to use it properly in anger. I've found that the slide handle and fridge handle interfere with each other in the locked position and as a result the slide handle doesn’t lock in properly to the plastic clip that is designed to hold it in place. Attached is a picture of my temporary fix, I added a piece of pine packing which gave the clearance needed to lock the slide handle in position.
I contacted MSA who distribute the slides and they were very helpful but none of their suggestions solved my problem and in the end they told me to drill some extra holes in the frame so the mounting bracket holding the clip could be moved forwards, hopefully giving enough room to allow the clip and handle to lock into position, but I have yet to try this. MSA took on board my issue and told me they would may need to make some design changes.
I’m also not real keen on the use of straps to hold the fridge in place, but apparently they have had problems with people over tightening turnbuckles resulting in the frame the fridge sits on distorting and so not sliding properly.
I have also yet to work out exactly how to ensure the power cable doesn’t get damaged.
I also have a Michelle’s Sacs transit bag, it just fits but I can see that it will only take a moments inattention and it will get damaged.
Despite all this I’m happy I bought it, but the cost is a bit breathtaking. You may be able to get one cheaper at the
Perth 4x4 next weekend.

There was a thread about using cable carrier a couple of months ago, anyone got any pictures on how they used it as I'm interested, but just not sure how to connect it up to protect the power lead.
I presume the segments need to be large enough to pass the ends of the cable through?

Hi Rainman
Do you really need to keep the handle on the fridge when in the dropslide? As a suggestion, if the handle gets in the way it would be easier to remove it, and either use the tie down brackets that come with the Engel turnbuckle kit or make some up yourself which use the same screws as the handle.

I lift my fridge in and out quite a bit so I keep the handles on for convenience, plus you actually have to use the handles to attach the straps that come with the slide (unless you choose to bolt it permanently into position). I bought the new ARB fridge straps and bracket which seems a better set up but I’m not convinced the handles on the Engel will take too much strain on them before they start to bend. I am considering using turnbuckles and just not over tightening them to the point where the slide risks damage.

I know most people do, but I dont think Engel recommend using the handles to tie the fridge down. Before the drop slide I had an Engel fridge slide which comes with the turn buckles and brackets which use the handle retaining bolts.
The bracket are available separate from
Engel Here but could be easily made.
The fridge slides now come with tie down straps, or
mine did, but I prefer the turnbuckles as
well.

Thanks everyone for your replies....great
feedback. Away at work at the moment, so trying to talk the missus in to going to the 4x4 show, see if we can score a show special....anyone know how much companies could knock off an item of that value, say on the last day of a show? I know the wood show on the last day, there is bargains to be had!
Thats interesting about the design fault with the handles, thanks for sharing. Seems weird no-one else has mentioned it! Maybe was a bad batch....
One other question... I plan on making some drawers up, but they wont be completed by our next trip, in around 3 weeks....so if I temporarily mounted it now on some ply (attached to floor, flush), is there enough extended length to clear my tailgate I wonder?
Cheers,
Wazza

Have been looking at one for our 60l Engel and what I have seen has been impressive .
The comments of others here are very good too.
I had to query the weight of the particular one I was interested in and at 42kg it is rather weighty .Weight was confirmed.
We are going to the
Perth 4wd and Adventure Show this weekend so hopefully there may be a ' show special ' that I can pick up.
