Hi, i am looking to go camping north of Perth for my first time ever for my birthday on the 20th of December with a close group of friends and i have no idea where to start researching or who to ask so I came here to this forum looking for help.

I was wondering if I could ask where would be a good place to camp, preferably on the coast on a beach somewhere or very close to a beach, If that is legal to do so.

I am looking for a spot that is just perfect for gazing up at a night sky filled with stars from our milky way galaxy.

General tips would be greatly appreciated

Also, what are general rules/laws expected of me and my friends if we were to camp there.

Id like to make this a smooth camping trip for a first time as possibly can be :)

You could try Sandy Cape just above Jurien but be warned there'll be loads of kids there. Very close to the beach and but if you get there early you can find good areas for group camping.
There is or was a caretaker on site who collected the daily tolls and looked after the toilets....well sort of anyway as they stank the last time I was there.
Take your own water and anything else you may need and if you forget anything it's not far back down the road to stores at Jurien.
Enjoy.

Hi David
Sandy Cape as mentioned further up Indian Ocean dr is Cliff head north 6ks short of the Brand highway this is the only spot camping is allow there are heaps of places but all have a sign NO CAMPING then, north of Geraldton is Coronation Beach which could be full of windsurfers again caretaker and fees apply a 4wd is not require to access these places or the beach. At Lucky Bay between Northamton and Kalbarri it is a must for beach and dune driving.
Rules are have fun BUT respect others 10pm curfew (if close to others) and keep the scene clean

Wish you luck David.
We come from NSW and spent 2 months on your beautiful coast and found very nice places to camp however NO CAMPING signs displayed at most. Others were packed to the eyeballs and over camped.
Book ahead ? No mobile phone access.
The plan is to herd us into grotty caravan parks.
We won't be back, not only my opinion.

Wow thanks for the ideas guys, and thanks alot for the positive attitude :D

I'm looking at sandy cape and it seems to be quite ok, so my friends and i are meant to pay a toll for camping there? and is it really that packed during December? around the time I want to be up there? :S

Also is it a good place to stay for a well lit night sky?

The night sky is the most important thing I'm looking for, I want it to be a birthday I will never forget :)

Hi David
I think there is a caretaker who,ll chase you for the dollars.Personal opinion not based on ever having been there at that time of the year but I would think on 20th Dec you would be OK closer to Xmas day and especially boxing day might be a different matter. Go on to the beach away from any lights and the stars will come out to play except if it,s cloudy LOL

Hi

The link below is to the Sandy Cape Code of Conduct put out by the Shire of Dandaragan under Ranger Services. It includes costs.

It should answer some of your questions.

The only other thing I can add to what you have been told is to watch out for the ants there. They are nocturnal and what can look like a good site during the day can become a carpet of moving ants at night.

Other than that it is a nice spot.

Thanks for the information, but i'm also looking for like secluded quiet spots, where there are little to no people and, where we can set up a camp fire and play music till night, my friends and i are in no way a rowdy bunch, but we do like to stay up all night and enjoy it :)

David, the harsh reality of life is that anyone who has a quiet secluded spot wants it exactly for that purpose, because its quiet. It's school holidays and parents would be trying to get the kids to sleep. To put it bluntly, you would not be welcome.

That time of the year I would think there would be a complete fireban in the northern areas.

Might be best to find a good party in the city.

Oh I don't mean like loud noise and rowdy noise, we are very quite and calm people, we just don't like the fact that there is a 10pm curfew, and when i mean a quiet secluded spot, I mean camping somewhere far away from other camping sights, places where I heard you can camp in and its not on any reserve or anywhere populated and there are little rules.

Sorry David but to find somewhere like you describe is almost impossible especially that time of year unless you travel a long way I have not stayed at sandy cape been there twice but never stayed I did spend a night along with several other people just up from there the sky was awesum at night Do still go but finding a nice secluded spot you may have to go again in a quieter time of the year Have fun I am sure you will enjoy

Greetings David,

You are asking a lot for your weekend trip North, especially at this time of year.

We can suggest an alternative that may tick the of boxes on your quest.

Distant relatives of ours run a farm out of Badgingarra and this may provide a base to camp at for your weekend.

Hi Valley

While it is not on the coast, it is close by and there are good facilities provided on site.

We hope that this helps.

Cheers,
Wayne & Sally.

Would say Sandy Cape is not for you TRY Cliff head north further up IODrive when you hit the ocean 100 mtrs off IOD turn right go down the track which run by the beach till you get a spot that is far enough away from other campers. It is probably 4wd and camper trailer at best not van friendly. I,ve only been a couple of ks up it but think it goes all the way round the bay.
