I own 95 Defender, and so far i broke and wore out splines on two sets of rear axles just cruising on dirt road.Does anyone else has this problems? My local LR dealer reckons every now and than this happens on some Landrovers. is this true?

I have a 94 Defender, 220000k's. Just replaced both rear axles and splines. Seems its fairly common. Been a bloody good truck otherwise. How many cruisers etc can still get 24 mpg crossing the simpson??

I know Landrover has copped a hiding recently in regard to reliability, so my comment is in jest - the Dept I worked for from the mid '70's had SWB LR's and we were always told that they purposely designed the axles weak so that you didn't break something else, like the gearbox! Sorry fellars.

Ashcrofts in the UK do specially toughned shafts for landrovers as do other companies you can find their addresses in Landrover International magasine
