Mount Oxley is on private property & takes 30-40 minutes from
Bourke. For access contact the
Bourke Visitors Centre who will either give you Bill or Denise's contact details. They charged us $60 for the night (two adults & 2 children under 10) but we had the mountain & amenities to ourselves. The extra cost was nothing because it's the sort of place that you rarely get such private access to.
At the top of the mountain on the western side there's a large roofed area with two gas BBQ's & a sink powered by a battery operated pump for washing up with plenty of tables & chairs. Adjacent to this area are two
toilets (not pits).
Access is via a Telstra track which is sealed but in poor condition with numerous potholes, only suitable for a camper trailer but not a caravan. The
views at sunset are stunning.
Bourke seems to be getting poor reviews on this website in so far as being a safe place to stay, so while I know the owners wouldn't like to be inundated with people, Mount Oxley is a great alternative & I'm really glad we found it.
