Waeco fridge repairer Quilpie-Birdsville area??

We're headed west and our only fridge the Waeco CF 60 is playing up.

It's an older one that doesn't have temp displayed, but a range of settings from cool to freeze, which you set using the 'temp' button. The lights along those different temp settings are flashing along in a line like pattern, and the fridge is constantly on. From reading others threads I expect its the thermostat.

As we are mid trip, and currently camped at Quilpie and due to head towards Birdsville today (Saturday) I need to urgently find someone to fix it.
Any ideas??

I doubt there will be anyone in Quilpie, Windorah or Birdsville. Charleville may have someone if you want to back track slightly.

Any Rain out that way??

Cheers Kev

I think you're right Kev. Been out of range, but now in Birdsville Caravan Park. I've posted below with the latest on things.

I don't think there's been much rain in Birdsville. Some.. but not a lot according to the guy at the park reception. As for Windorah and Quilpie they had over a 1inch which was quite a lot.

Hang a right when you get to Windorah, and head up to Longreach. There a number of refrigeration blokes up there. Surely one of them would be able to help you Monday morning.

Go and see "Chicken" @ Longreach Refrigeration, in Spoonbill St. He's pretty switched on....

Had the same trouble with ours last week, $250 to fix, decided to purchase a new one.

Try www.weaco.com.au, they have their service people listed, but as Sir Kev said, there's not much out that way.

Good luck.

This problem can be caused by one of the temp buttons sticking down. The usual fix is to peal the display sticker off from over those lights, remove the push button and sand it down a bit so it does not stick then replace the sticker with a new one.
My smaller Waeco does the same as yours and I find I can just keep tapping the stuck button until it un-sticks, the hard part is getting it to un-stick on the right temp setting you want.
If this does not work you could always remove the sticker to release the button until you can get to a service centre to buy a new one.
Hope this is of help
Chris

Chris,

A squirt of CRC 2-26, or silicon spray might stop the sticky switches.

2-26 is recommended for electrical "stuff", though the silicon might be better in a dusty environment.

DO NOT spray any crc or silicone into the button area.

If you spray anything into the buttons it will make all buttons stop working as it contaminates the carbon spot from contacting the printed circuit board contacts.

It is the fault of the "over cover" holding down the buttons and not the buttons themselves. Chris and Debbie has already explained this.

Aussies seem to be trained from birth to spray stuff onto things in the belief it will do something.

Chris could be on the money. Had the exact same problem with our CF 60 and found it was the little buttons sticking down. From memory it was the one that adjusts the temp setting.
Gave them a real good clean up and no more problem 2 years later.

Well worth a try

Before spraying anything like silicone etc first clean it out with contact cleaner, it cleans all gunk out of and is designed for electrical use, that on its own may fix the problem.

Got me, Ross......again. :-)))

You may be right, the 2-26 could contaminate the carbon spot, perhaps I should have suggested graphite powder, but no doubt you would say that it would short out the PCB tracks?

Sorry you have to carry the burden of us who believe "it will do something"

Quilpie has an industrial estate with plenty of businesses. My advice is try asking the people at the Channel Caravan Park, they'd know if anyone in Quilpie can help you. They helped us last month by referring us to an engineer after we had trouble with our camper.

Thanks everyone for your comments.

As you guys mentioned, it has turned out to be the temperature switch which had felt like it got stuck down. For a while it freed itself up but now it looks like it's burnt itself out (I unscrewed the cover to see the circuit board underneath and some white corrosion/dust around the push switch).

So it is now running at 5 out of 7 (7 being freeze) and stuck on that (ie the button has stopped working). We are in Birdsville preparing for our crossing of the Simpson so will have a wander around town tomorrow morning, but am not going to hold my breathe! I guess I'll need a new circuit board, as don't really want someone trying to resolder that push button switch. The thought of not having a fridge across the simpson is unbearable!

So my plan is to hold out (possibly till Alice Springs) until I can get hold of a Waeco dealer, and get the part. Does anyone know if it's the whole PCB I need, or will they replace just the specific temp switch?
