Review: Victoria Interactive DVD

My Shop Item Rating: My Rating 3/5

Not quite as rave a review as others:
Quality is OK, but there is extra information such as the 'see enlargement map xxxx' present on the digital version and gets in the way of map detail on the 1:100,000 maps which I feel is superfluous. Most digital mapping software can be configured to pick the 'best resolution map' for a particular area.
I found on some of the composite maps (e.g. North East Composite) my routes appeared offset, indicating the calibration software files are not correct. There is a corrected calibration file for one composite file only (Melbourne area) available for download directly from VicMaps. Recommend using the smaller maps and configuring your software to pick the correct map for your location.
My second complaint for digital maps is the inclusion of grid lines any indication of their latitude or longitude. Again my software is quite capable of adding those (with magnetic correction). OK they can provide a rough idea of distance (100m) but again on a digital display this is often superfluous information.
Still it's a huge improvement on the 30 year old 1:250,000 available for free (thats the one you get free with most GPS navigators) as it's based upon much more recent surveys.
Finally note while the product states it is only for Oziexplorer you can convert to other map formats with a bit of effort (try gdal_translate, part of the GDAL tool kit).
