BUSH CAMPER
My brother in law had his van broken into while in storage, door forced and lost only a few things, solar panel, TV and a couple of small things. The insurance covered the TV and small things but not the solar panel.
He dosen't know why. Would it come under his house insurance?
Can any body give advice?

Hi Bush camper,
Sorry to hear of the theft. As for advice on what polices cover, almost all polices differ and he'll find insurance companies cover different things in different ways.
His best bet would be to contact the house insurance Co. and see whats covered by the house hold policy.
cheers

What has been said above is correct, policies differ, and they differ from company to company, in basic language you get what you pay for, if you pay a mini minor premium you get bugger all, if you pay a rolles royce premium you get,
well, lets say a bit more.
I suggest having a talk to the insurance company as to why it wasn't covered, and make arrangements to get it covered in the event of it happening again.

Is it possible that your BIL had the TV and other bits listed on his policy and not the solar panel. Sometimes any item not considered a part of the van has to be added to a policy.
A broker told me some time ago that if it is not listed on the documentation it is most probably not covered.
Leaves a bad taste in the mouth to find some low life has stolen your stuff.
Cheers

I have had 2 different house insurance companies since I’ve been caravanning – in both instances QBE and SGIO have required that I specify the solar panels (they weren’t fixed to the caravvan) under portable items on the house policy and pay an extra premium.
No premium – no cover.

Hi
I am insured with CIL. Solar panel was cracked while travelling. Sent them a photo and they fully covered the replacement cost. The solar panel is portable but was attached to the camper. Was not specified on the policy but CIL said anything purchased and part of the camper was covered.
cheers

Thanks, saves me a phone call, I am guessing that when the panel is plugged in it is now attached.
thanks Hugh

What a horrible experience. An interesting thought for us to all check out our insurance policies...my 2 panels are in the garage...are they covered if someone breaks into my garage?
Are they covered while we're on the road?
How many people read your story and planned to check their cover?
Good luck to you.
Insurance companies are good on loop-holes in many cases, aren't they?
