New D-Max

I am thinking of buying a new D-Max, they are very nice to drive, they have all the bells and whistles. But can anyone tell me if they will still be one piece after a run across the Plenty Highway or a drive to the "Tip" or a trip to Innamincka and Camerons Corner and the Oodnadatta Track?
Will the dash board fall out, or the hood lining fall down or the windows start rattling.
I only ask because I am hearing about how good the power is and the 3 ton towing capacity, but nobody is saying what the rest of the vehicle is like????
All comments are welcome.

Had ours for about 3 months and 7000 Ks a little bit of off road and nothing had fallen off so far. I have had Isuzu vehicles for around 12 years (imported ones MU and MU Wizard) which have very good build quality, and I believe the D.Max is built very well also.

Nope, it rattles too much when compared to a Quality Landcruiser ;)

Hi Bruce

Last time we talked you were getting a canopy put on and a canopy roof rack, but were worried about the roof rails being in the way. How did you end up going?

Cheers
Aaron

Hi Aaron, yes canopy is on (looks great) just waiting for the vent to turn up then we put that in and the roof rack on, it will fit with about 10/20mm clearance.

HI Bruce

Thanks for that. I've been following your build as I have similar ideas. If you have email details outside of this foum htat would be handy to swap info. Did you go for the ARB canopy?

My 2008 Colorado (isuzu) has been to all the places you mention. It has been boringly reliable for 120000 kms thus far, despite various dealer's best efforts to do it in (joke). The tub tray has split (abuse - overloading the canopy on corrugations - still works though) and the EGR valve has been replaced. That's it warts and all.
The new dmax is still using the same 4jj1 engine which has been perfect, teamed with an auto box. It's a bit down on the outputs of the new ford/mazda, colorado, VW etc., but it is still a worthy donk with runs on the board in the reliability stakes, which the others have yet to prove.

I have last years Colorado, It has been on dirt roads from Mt Isa to Birdsville to Hadden corner to the Dig tree, it has also done the plenty Hwy the east and west Mcdonalds, it has been up the Sandover Hwy through the Davernport ranges, and a few other rough as guts roads towing either a Camper trailer or a 5 mt boat.

I love it and haven't come close to braking it.

The new Dmax and the Colorado are basically the same vehicle, chassis and body, Sheetmetal is different and engine, powertrain is different too.

All the common utes aren't really strong but used wisely will do a good job.
The Colorado claims more power and torque with a smaller engine while the 3litre Dmax claim is less it is also less stressed while working.

Most Dmax seem to stay together ok and other makes seem to have proportionately more trouble.

You have probably only driven it and others on bitumen roads so the "feel" on the tracks you mentioned will be quite different.

Any vehicle claiming big torque and big horsepower will also use more fuel to provide that energy while operating at that level so towing loads are something to be considered.
Only testing with a load and feedback will give you some idea of expected fuel use while towing a load.
Yes they will pull 3 ton or 3.5 ton or even more if the manufacturers can stake a claim to being the greatest.

If you go and look at the section size of the rear of the chassis on most of these types vehicles you will be disappointed to see all the towing is via two slender chassis sections to which the BIG towbar unit is bolted to, and of course your expensive caravan hangs on that. To overload that is unwise.

All salemen/women from all makes aren't engineers but do give advice as to the strength of the chassis. I don't wear rose coloured glasses so don't see the same capabilities as they readily accept.

If it is rated at 3ton and you want to travel with some degree of safety and some reserve capability and especially if it is used on rough tracks, my view is not to exceed 2/3 of the stated amount the manufacturers claim their vehicles will operate at.

Using your formula of 2/3 almost all vehicles towing vans around now would be over loaded. What would you use to tow a 26ft van that weight around 3 tonne.

Weight and towing capacity isn't a standard or set formula for all vehicles.

A lot of other factors come into play including powertrans capabilities, cooling capacity, handling and rigidity/strengh.

It also has a lot to do with intended use, reliability, manufacturing warranty costs and buyer perspectives..... for example a passenger car may have a greater towing capacity then a light commercial vehicle, not because anything I have listed above in the previous paragraph; but more to do with strategic calculations...... a light commercial may in theory carry more capacity but it will also be required to carry weight more often and over longer distances.

So the reliability will decrease and there will be a bigger chance for a claim.....a passenger car may tow 2000Kg 0.0015% of the time compared with a light commercial vehicle towing it 70% of the time.

So in the eyes of the manufacture the chances of a problem is increased with a light commercial vehicle...... (weight X frequency)..... the only way to reduce it is reduce the weight carry capacity.

So in theory light commercial vehicles can carry over their capacity for a short time.

Hi MarJac
We bought a Dmax because of it's good reputation and a couple of friends have them as well and have given them a flogging here in the NT and they have proven to be well screwed together and reliable.

I did a bit of a write up on my brief ownership experience of the new Dmax in this forum if you are interested. Thread 97572. Glad I bought it and wouldn't have anything else.

Happy travels.
