Greg,

That's a big ask. We run OziExplorer software on a windows tablet computer fitted with a usb gps and use lots of electronic maps - this keeps track of where we are and where we've been, but it all costs money, and coming to grips with such a system isn't easy. It provides a lot of detail which is very useful at the time. Of course you also need paper maps to refer to.

At the other end of the scale, with very detail, all our trips are recorded on one laminated map of Australia (about a metre square and available from Australian Geographic, Hema, etc). We draw our track on using a fine tipped texta.

One way we've seen travellers use is to buy a good book of maps covering all of Australia (Hema or similar) and highlight their route with a highlighter pen. This has the advantage of being a good reference as well as recoding where you've been. You can also add postit notes to point to special places, good camp sites, etc. This might be a good way for you to go - no technology hassles on the road, and you will be carrying paper maps anyway.

Cheers

John

We've got a laminated map from Australian Geographic too, it's nice and big and good for hanging on a wall. We draw our route on in texta as described and stick postage stamp sized pictures at various locations around Australia.

If you want a digital map to upload to a blog to update family/friends with where you've been just go to www.google.com.au and choose Images up on the top right hand side and search for "detailed map of australia".

Why don't you check out the shop right here on ExplorOz. And if you want it electronically then you're going to have to come up to speed with the computer otherwise you'll get very frustrated.

...and this'll be the one you should consider Natmap Digital Maps 2008 - 250k Scale.

Hello Feathery,

If you ring me on 0408 156 903 I can send you a photo of the maps I have used many years.

The maps are deadly accurate and contained in one book with access to all the
sat. nav. co-ordinates for all of Australia.

I also use Hema Maps and all the G.P.S. do dads available but often go back to my old faithful book of maps to confirm a location.

Not sure about maps of the mainland Feathery but apparently maps of Tasmania are getting harder to find these days.

I know this is not what you asked but we bought a Map that is a sticker and put it on our Bonnet. We then traced our trip on the map. It was a great talking point as people would stop to have a look.
You can get them from Hema.

Book into a Top Tourist caravan park and they will have a good sized map showing their locations around Australia. Sometimes it’s in the laundry or camp kitchen. Dont bother with the Albury one – some rotten sod’s stolen it.

Is this what you want?

Use the free software "Paint" on your computer to add lines where you have travelled / driven. It may take a little while to get the hang of Paint so save the original map and then practise drawing lines in different thickness and colours as well as erasing.

Here is one of mine I have started and not completed

I am not sure if saving that top image will allow you to get a clear picture once it is enlarged on your computer...if not I could email it to you if that is what you are chasing

I just tried this and it worked ok without distortion when I open it in Paint

Do this..just right click with your mouse on the bottom original image and left click "save picture as"

Save it wherever (desktop if you might lose where it goes) and then open Paint... open that image and off you go

You did say you were not up to speed with computers so dont be offended if I have told you how to do something you have already mastered

cheers
