Advice for new car purchase...

Hey there, I am new to this forum. After reading through a few other threads I figured I would get some good opinions on what sort of car to buy.

I am currently driving a diesel 2009 grand vitara. Whilst it has been a great car with no issues off road other than clearance I am hoping to upgrade to something larger - to carry more equipment for longer trips.

My budget is 35-40k, I normally visit stradbroke and Fraser A few times a year and was hoping to maybe do a cape trip and other off road trips. At the moment I don't have anything large to tow.

The issue I am having is to whether to buy a new or near new isuzu, triton or navara. Or should I buy a Hilux that is not quite so new but seem to last forever and retain their value.

Any opinions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've owned 4 luxies & i thought they were the best the most recent being an 08 model - all I can say now is that Toyota really has to lift their game compared to other utes out there they are very underpowered, have very low tow ability, aesthetics & connectivity etc still in the 90s, standard stuff an expensive option - personal choice always come into it but I think hilux owners need to of done more homework before they purchased.

Toyota Hilux must be doing something right as they were the highest selling car in Oz for 5 months and only just being overtaken by Mazda 3 in October

There is a large difference between what people perceive and reality.
Marketing and perception sells more Hiluxes than others and it is not necessarily they are better or even up to the level of others.
People buy Harley Davidsons because of Hype, resale and image marketing but are far from the best.
I now see Hilux in the same category.

Earlier Hilux models were better value for money.
Resale on a current Hilux is good but only because of the believed image. A large number of Hilux and Prado have had more than their fair share of fuel system failures. Around 10 Toyota failures
to one of Mazda and other makes.

Yes, deciding is hard to do because it all depends on the persons viewpoint re reliability, life, economy, towing capacity etc and perceived resale value.
I didn't purchase Hilux because to get the same thing would have cost me $12,000 more. Even a 3 year old Hilux was $8000 more and had 50,000km use. So what is the importance of resale value when you have lost the coins in the first place when buying?

Thanks Michelle and Ross, I had heard similar things about the older Hilux being more worth the money. Very good point about loss of initial value.

We had a 2006 Hilux and traded it for a Nissan pathfinder as the Hikux didn't have the towing capacity to tow our van, although in saying that it did tow the van for a couple of years until we put it over a weigh bridge and found we were over the Toyota towing capabilities. I did a lot of research before buying the pathfinder and our main points for buying the pathfinder were the towing capability and the turning circle of the utes over the station wagon. the turning circle is smaller on the wagons than on the utes, in some cases by a meter and a half, which is crucial for us. the down side is I now have to pack everything precisely and tie it all down. One other factor the pathfinder is a bit more fuel efficient than any of the Ute's, that we looked at. Mazda/ ford, and the Navara, and Isuzu. came very close to buying the D Max, but they wouldn't come down to my price that I was prepared to pay for it, or give me enough money for the Hilux. So we now own the Nissan Pathfinder TI 550, v6 diesel. Isuzu triton and Navara have very big turning circles which in my opinion is a pain when trying to get into shopping centre car parks. I hope this is helpful to you.

Thanks Broodie, that definitely helps a lot. I wasn't aware of the turning circle differences, towing is not so much of an issue at this stage.

If you do think about towing in the future then it might not be a bad idea to contact the manufacturer for advise if whatever you want to tow is up near the car's maximum capacity.

I received the email below just before I bought my last car. I won't say which manfacture it was because they are all much the same. One of them did specify a maximum off road weight and it was 2000 kg below the on road maximum.

Toyota seems to be a lot more realistic with towing capacities for the Hilux when you consider the size and weight of the car plus the long distance the tow ball is behind the rear axle. That distance is about the same on all utes of this type. High tow ball weights that far back have been known to cause chassis damage. It also gives the car a long heavy tail to wag which can be disastrous if a big van starts to sway.

The newer diesel Mitsubishi Challengers are pretty nice cars with a 5 year warranty.

I have to agree, had my Challenger (2010) for just under 3 years, and found it to be a great car and very capable on off road conditions.

Cheers
