June next year from Perth... which is the best direction to travel up the west coast, to Darwin or go east across Nullarbor and through broken hill and over to east coast and up to Darwin and down centre

Regardless of prevailing winds, odd on the very strongest ones will be head winds which ever way you travel. Go the way you want to go and follow the seasons - south in the summer and north in the winter. If you meet a very strong headwind, be prepared to pull over and stay until morning by which time it will usually be calm.

ozzimax11,
You wouldn't do better than to listen to what Motherhen has to say. They have been travelling this wide brown & sometimes windy land for quite a while and been place I can only dream of getting to one day. As she says, if it's windy just pull over & hunker down and wait it out if it's going to be an issue...

It's known as the
"Caravanners Curse".
That slow gentle breeze you calculated would be a tail wind when you hitched up turns into a full blown head on storm as soon as you leave your nice secure camp.

But as MH says follow the seasons , as well as that when I do the East - West crossing I keep an eye on the weather patterns and try to do it with a tail wind for at least half way , if not all.

Last trip I actually got it right all the way to "The Alice" and back except for the bit on the Yorke Peninsular !
