Hullo Laurie

Have you also posted your query on the Bushtracker and BOGGERS sites? There are 19 Silverado owners registered on the latter and probably a few more on the BT site.

As a guide, my F250 (7.3L, GVM 5.7) gets about 22L/100 on the open road with 3T BT and around town with no van, about 15L/100

Cheers
Andrew

Not bad for that size motor.
My tests on a 4.5L V8 Troopy with caravan – 6 tonnes (over the weighbridge)
265 wide tyres at 40PSI 20L/100K
Original skinnys at 50PSI 18L/100K
These are good conditions –with hills and head winds, drops to 25L/100K or less depending on how hard you push it

Yes that is correct I should have said either less k’s per litre or more litres per k.
Those figures are on bitumen around 90Ks per hour – it drops down quickly pushing above 100ks/hr also (at 6 tonne).

hi
yes the fuel consumption figures go to very hi no matter what vehicle it is
once you pass 90-95k/ p-hr mark when towing and i've towed with quite a few different brands over the years

Mazcan
With a wheelbase of 4m, I go around the block :-)
Saves putting a lot of stress on the dual axle van as well.

The turning circle, like the fuel economy would be that of a small pacific island nation...:)

Actually Bantam, the fuel economy is not too bad considering the all up weight of 8T.
We have met many people towing large-ish vans with small 3L or so turbo diesels who get worse fuel consumption and who are surprised at the figure we get.
The big International turbo diesel does it easy at 90 - 100 kph on the flat and could be considered as barely run in at 150 000 km.
The other advantage is its load carrying capacity. We tend to carry most of the food and accessories in the truck and leave the van as light as possible.
Unlike many rigs, it is well below the legal limits. As you may know, police in many states are cracking down on over-mass vehicles. Earlier this month I was waved through a weigh bridge check point on the Murray Valley Hwy where there was a big operation weighing vehicles towing vans. I guess the guy knew his vehicle GVM and GCMs and reckoned I was a lost cause :-)

Yes I do understand the realities......but that is no fun.

Besides its american and deserves to be made fun of.

Ya cant change the laws of physics and it is necessary to burn the same amount of fuel to shift the same mass.
So regardless of, how big the engine is or how fast you go, there is a minimum quantity of fuel required to do the job.

I am fascinated by people who intend hooking up several tonnes and dragging it arround the country side and then start talking about "fuel economy"......face facts its "fuel consumption" and gratuitous consumption at that.
If people where genuinely interested in "fuel economy" they would not be dragging a block of flats arround the country side

AND oh yess......the vast majority of large caravan rigs out there are far to close to to the wind on GVM for my liking.

cheers

HI Laurie,

I cannot speak from personal experience but I have been researching this myself and talking to any owners of them that I come across in our travels.
From what I gather they are more fuel efficient than the V8 landcruiser diesel (current model).
3 different owners I have spoken to claim 17 to 18 litres/100km when towing (one was towing a van approaching 4tonne).
In comparison we averaged 19 litres/100km towing just a 2750kg van over 7000km recently with a 200 series.
When not towing the claimed official figures (from Silverado brouchure) is 1094km from 136l tank (about 12litres/100km).
Even though it is a 6.6litre engine it is not working very hard to do its job. The engine is built by Isuzu who are renowned for their diesel engine technology and efficiency. The Allison 6 speed auto is also a great match to the engine and is almost "bullet proof" and is designed for use in trucks up to 12 tonnes so even it is not over taxed in a Silverado.
So far everything I have learnt about the Silverado impresses me...I cannot fault them as yet. So much so I think I will ditch the 200 series and get one, some day.
Cheers

My son has recently purchased one for his business (ski boat manufacturer) and to pull his Trackmaster dual axle caravan. Hasn't towed the van with it yet but has towed many ski boats (6 metre inboards - approx 1.6T inc trailer). Economy figures to date are:

Around town - 18L/100K (heavyish foot - love that V8 sound).
Around town with boat - 19L/100K.
Country with boat - 16L/100K.
No figures for country without boat.

Hope this helps,
Jim.
