Hi all,
This is my first time on the forum so I am hoping that I am using it for its intended purpose!

Our air con in our 2006 pop top has died. We are looking at options for replacing it. Does anyone out there have a roof top air con on a pop top? Is this at all possible or are they too heavy for this type of van?

The air con we have is an air command Heron Q. It sits in a cupboard space and the vent is on the outside next to the door.

We were thinking that if we could get a roof top one we would gain an extra cupboard!! Well two really as the motor takes up most of the space in the cupboard in which it sits.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Especially from those of you who have a pop top.

Ta,
GORNSKI

Our Jayco Westport Poptop originally had a built in air con but had been removed before we bought it. When in T'ville last year looked into installing a roof top. Seems no problem. Need a H frame for support & take care to avoid any wiring. Cost between $3,200 & $3,500 & a day to fit (2 quotes). We did not go ahead as couldn't be done in the time we had available. The extra cupboard & storage come in handy Bill

Might be an idea to also try the Caravanners' Forum - I recall advice there and elsewhere suggesting air conditioners on pop tops can be a literal burden, when putting the roof up. As well as replacement of your existing type of AC, lots of vanners recommend opting for a domestic type split system, if you have room on the drawbar for the main unit - very effective, long warranties and quite cheap.

Sorry - my contribution should have been a reply, not this follow up.

Lyn and Jim Hi,
As Bill stated a H frame is the better way of fitting onto roof top, the gas struts can be re gassed to accommodate the extra weight.
I considered similar a while ago but considering that I travel a lot of "off bitumen"roads, decided that there would be too much vibration etc... I think short hauls on bitumen roads should be okay.

It might be worth looking at a number of options as things have probely moved on from when your van was built.

There are some rugedised split system air cons out there now and the compressor sits on the drawbar and the rest is relativly small.

If it is a pop top ridid van.....it may mount to the cieling or wall in the rigid portion.

cheers

we had a 1986 jacyo pop top in 2005 we had a reverse cycle split system installed bought it fromTthe Good Guys mounted the compressor on the rear bar of the van. We had the vans rear window removed and the A/C head unit installed there worked a treat.
