G'day there,

Just wondering if the experts out there can help with info about the commonly used mapping software programs.
Is the iPad capable of running them (any of them), and if so,
1) Is the iPad practical for this purpose (v's a laptop)
2) Would 16GB, 32GB or 64GB capacity be needed?

Thanks
Poitr

Hi

You need to have the 3g iPad as the non 3g doesn't have a built in gps (much to my surprise after I bought mapping software for mine).

I don't think size would be a big issue as long as you don't have to much other stuff on the iPad.

I use a 16GB I-Pad (actually should have bought a 32GB one as I also have a fair I-Tunes list of songs as well) and purchased the Hema (I think now called 4WD Australia) app.

For me (old fart who wants to know where I am and where there's a track to escape) it's just perfect...works a charm.....it's NOT "turn by turn" navigation and if want to dowload a route and follow that route then it's also not for you BUT given I had the I-Pad anyway, and use it for mobile e-mail and internet then buying the app at a fraction of the cost of the Hema Navigator (or similar) was perfect for me.

BUT I would def go for a 32GB or 64GB if you planned on loading it up with songs as well.

Gidday

My wise old dad away used to say " figure out what you want then see if you can stretch the budget and buy the next size up or the better brand"
I have usually followed his advice but didn't when I bought my ipad. I wish I had ... It doesn't take long to start to fill up

Cheers

Wise words rocco.

For the differential def go the bigger one(or biggest)....when I bought mine it was largely just for "mobile internet", I have since discovered it can be used for so much more.

If your iPad is not 3G and GPS you can get an external GPS, either plug in or bluetooth.
For turn by turn GPS MetroView is supposed to be good.
Maps n Trax (a replacement for Bitmap) is similar to Oziexplorer in that it uses your own maps such as Geoscience, but you have to set them up for Maps n Trax

samsung galaxey note 10.1 is far better value for money

you can get the wifi only version and it has GPS it will also take a 64 gig micro SD card

you can then load your ozi explorer maps onto it and run the ozi app $25

Just having GPS and micro SD card and ozi capabilities make any apple vs android a no brainer
i know this will stir some up but ipads are really only practical for looking cool along with nike shoes and a 1 direction T shirt
if your used to using a PC paying for everything and going through itunes to do anything will frustrate the heck out of you

another way is to get a chinese navigator off ebay

I recently set one up running ozi CE for under $130 including SD card and ozi CE

I am far from "looking cool" and "1 direction"...is that where I head to get to a 4WD track??

I reiterate what I did say above and that is basically for an old fart who knows stuff all about technology the I-Pad and Hema maps is perfect for what I need.

There is always cheaper and better options (need I start a thread on Tyres for example!!!!) but the question was about I-Pad so I answered as such.

I have used I-Tunes (and an I Pod to listen to music in my Fourby) for years so don't consider it "frustrating" at all, in fact bloody easy, load up the app, type in what you want and download to your hearts content!!

I do however want to add that I had the I-Pad already.....if you were going to buy one specifically for this reason, then maybe the Samsung is a better (cheaper) option

Thanks everyone for the input, which is appreciated.

Mark T6 ; I'm an old fart too, which has given me a level of comfort about the ipad's capability.

Poitr can I add also that it's bloody easy to use.

My wife sat it on her lap for our recent Cape York trip but we will buy a suction cup mount for it to save her having to hold it all the time.

It takes you to the best map for where you are, and if you are off road that can include some very good Topo Maps. The standard maps you buy are very comprehensive but you can also buy more from their digital map shop if you wish....and so easy, just go to the "Digital map shop" button on the app, open a map and down it comes.

The information was great, yes not turn by turn BUT she could tell me about tracks, creeks and other interesting stuff coming up AND you can even have it tracking where you went (fun for looking back).

The only downside is it sucks power at a rapid rate, so I have bought an I-Pad (you need a different one to an I-Phone) charger and this charges during the day, and easy to stick in my second battery connection to charge at the end of the day (if 240 power not availabale).

For a "plug and play" option you can't go wrong.

I would certainly find it frustrating having to download an app and download and pay for maps which wouldnt be as good as the ones i and my friends already have and all you have to do is plug it into the computer using an everyday microusb cord and just transfer them

i seamlessly have added maps you cant just download between my laptop running ozi, my phone running ozi and my chinese navigator running ozi

nothing gets downloaded - just transferred, drag and drop

I really CANNOT comment on the ipad, however will side with getoutmore on this one.
Although ozi is only in the beta stage, I find it easy to use - plus you can use it and Google maps at the same, and switch between the two.
You dont need any extra hardware for the Samsung tablet, it comes complete with all that you need.
I mount the tablet on my dash and it doesn't obscure any view of the road etc.
All the other functions are a bonus - photos, videos (high definition), email, web (I'm typing this reply on the Samsung).
Of course it's only natural to praise the unit you have already purchased (a bit like Nissan owners).
My 2 cents.
Cheers

Well I've got both Oziexplorer and Memory Map on Android and I prefer Memory Map by a mile. It works better on the touch screen and I like the computer planning app. The only reason Memory Map doesn't own the whole market is it is expensive with restrictive licencing on the maps.
I also have an ipad. The ipad is a little more stable than the Android. By that I mean the apps crash a bit more on Android. They are also more fiddley to set up. For a complete novice, the ipad is simpler.

A question about satellite connectivity............
Does the iPad or similar need to be up near the windscreen to "see" the satellites or do they work satisfactory "on the lap"?

Gidday

Ipad turn by turn using maps was switched in in australia a few days ago. pretty basic stuff but it worked in a drive to work the other day with the ipad sitting on the passenger seat. Not ideal but workable ...

cant speak for the ipad specifically but modern GPS in general is light years from where it used to be Ive got a few devices that pick up GPS in the house and they have zero problems being situated inside the car, though they will be a bit better and snappier on the dash

Make sure you get the New, new IPAD. The old, new Ipad 3 released only 2 months ago has been discontinued and replaced by the new new IPAD which apparently isn't called an IPAD 3 or even an IPAD 4. It's called the new new IPAD, or Ipad Retina.

But it does have the new Apple Iphone 5 style connector and a new retina display, and oh yeah, it really is 4G.

You have to love Apple.

I use the IPAD 2 and find it fantastic to use. It is the 32Gb 3G version but I do not use a sim card , you do not need one (if the 3G version).

I had an IPAD for other reasons so getting the navigation apps was easy to do. I have the Hema 4wd app installed plus a few others mentioned above. here are some free ones you can install.

Even though Oziexplorer does not run on it another app called Memory Map does and it is very easy to use, much easier than Ozi. I have a VMS 500s which has Ozi on it but have not used it for a long time as I use my IPAD. I also have OZI on a PC. If Ozi makes it to the IPAD I would definitely look at it. The Hema app uses Memory Map.
You can transfer routes and tracks to Memory Map in the GPX format.

The IPAD is mounted on the dash via a Clicon mount.

There are a few other apps which will run as well.

I also have Copilot, turn by turn software on the IPAD which is OK.

I do not know much about the Samsung and other mentioned so can't comment but the IPAD is a very good option for what you want but as said get 32Gb or more and get the 3G version with the built in GPS.

the samsung will do everything and alot more including atake a 64 gig card and run ozi and cost 2-300$ less

as i said its very much case closed when looking for a tablet for navigation

Kogan which is about as cheap as you will get has the 32 gig wifi only apple (in other words it wont even do what he wants )

for $569 no price on the 3g

fot the same money in the samsung you can get it with 3g although you dont need a 3g model to do what he wants and 75 gig capability
most importantly no itunes just drag and drop maps run oz

i or the free ozi clone app androzic

while ozi isnt the be all and end all, using ozi opens up a huge number of maps some are specialty maps such as the greg harwood series done to run on ozi and you can share maps, waypoints and tracks with pretty much anyone not using an apple
