New poster so excuse mistakes! I just purchased a challenger at auction and while on trip home the 4wd light came on while in H2wd? Also transfer stick shift too stiff wont engage 4wd low range?

Any takers please.

hi mr odd
before going on your trip did you check to see if the gearbox/tranfer case had the required amount of oil in them ??
you may well have
but i know of a lot a people that buy s/hand vehicles and never think of checking oil levels etc just drive off into the wide blue yonder after filling the fuel tank and assume everything is honky-dory because it was pre-owned

Hi to both and thanks for the replies. Unfortunately yes, I did check the fluid levels in all but the diff's. Seems the front diff is the problem, little bit of use today when I did get it into 4wdrive mode and it is noisy. Linkage seems lousy on transfer case and the light is a sticky sender unit. But noise in front diff seems terminal. Probably wound up too tight on sand, which I have now found evidence on, with small deposits in nooks & cranies. They dont supply jacks or places to test at auction rooms......no warranty either.

Hi mr odd

A friend of mine had a Challenger with simalar problems. His turned out to be that because people don't engage 4WD very often the selector shaft into the case sticks.
I think it is also vacumm operated so check that it is getting vacumm to the diaphram and if so maybe disconnect the linkage from the diaphram and manually work the selector shaft back and forward with a bit of lube on it. They need to be put in and out of 4WD occasionally to keep it freed up.

Hope this helps....Peter

Thanks peter, I think this may have been in 4wd resonably often, part of the problem. Possibly not serviced after beach use has made the shift pretty sticky.

Now more worried about the noisy diff. I dont fancy changing that. Getting a bit too gerri for climbing under things.

The fun of off road is just astounding. ah well.
