i recently attended the perth 4wd and adventure show on the sunday 11/11/12
i had a great day looking over everything from 9am to 4.45pm when i returned to my vw golf which was parked in the st mitchell park reserve on the west side of the show
being part of the designated zone for the show only to find my car drivers window smashed and several items that were out of site hidden and covered from view stolen $780 worth
it blew me away and i had to clean broken glass from the drivers seat and front and rear floors before been able to drive it
one guy parked his covertable only 30 meters from my car and left the top down with his valuables locked in the glove box his car wasn't touched he came back to his car while i was cleaning up glass
i annalized the scene and realised my small car was parked and basicly hidden amonst serveral raised suspension type 4wd's which afforded cover for the ferral robber
i didnt have a choice where i could park as traffic controllers guided each vehicle in
after the parking guides finished there was no securety staff ptrolling the area
i rang and reported to police and also my insurance company
last night just after 6pm i had a call from a suburban police station in perth
to tell me they had arrested a teenage burglar while he was at it again and found 2 of my securety marked items in his possesion a reversing monitor and a gps which are covered by vehicle insurance but are now not claimable as they have been recovered he admitted breaking into my car and has been charged with mine and the other offence
but the other items of mine he has quit for drugs
but there's still a chance that they will appear in some other crooks possesion down the track because they are all marked
and i am now waiting for the 2 items to be sent to me so that i can check them for damage and if that is the case i can lodge a case for damages against him
so the crux of the matter is that if you mark your valuables with your initials and drivers licence number some one will get caught
i know it wont stop these morons from breaking windows etc but it helps the police lay charges when they catch them
crime doesnt pay
i was advised that i can also claim the cost of my basic excess i had to pay to claim repairs
but the other items he stole and quit aren't claimable as they dont have enough proof because they weren't in his bag when arrested
and insurance doesnt cover them as they come under house hold policy and would only be covered if the car was in the garage or carport at the time of break-in
i have been going to the 4wd shows in perth for as long as they have been on and this is the first time i have had a problem
as they say -----it happens this is the second car thief problem i have had plus 2 house break-ins
more than my fair share me thinks
one has to grim and bare it and move on
cheers

Gidday Mazcan

That bit about the convertible reminds me of some advice to travellers I read 30 years ago on visiting Europe. It suggested the obvious (you don't leave anything of value in a car) and the not so obvious: don't lock the car. The theory was that the thieves would break a window to get into a locked car and even if they stole nothing you would still have a broken window to deal with.

Like I said, it's only a theory ...

Cheers

Mazcan Hi,
Pretty lousy ending to a good day.

The first thing I would be doing is changing my insurance broker (after a bollocking).
A household policy that does not cover personal items outside the home is not worth the premiums paid.

My daughter living at home, was on her way to the coast with boyfriend while temporarily away from His car it was broken into. Her personal belongings were fully covered by My policy,His was not obviously.

Don't think You will have a lot of luck with damages against Him.

Regards,

Mike.

What about getting valuables marked with microdot. You can buy it in a spray can and the thief wouldn’t know its marked. As for leaving car unlocked, I often park at boat ramps and have found it better to leave car unlocked than to come back and find window smashed or door lock destroyed. I also leave glovebox and console open as a display that nothing is inside.
Wouldn’t you love to catch them in the act!
