Hi all,

I recently picked up my hj47 cruiser and it appears the rear driver side brake is sticking.
after spending 5 minutes on the brake drum with a hammer I have a fair amount of free play, it just doesn't want to slide off. is there anything else i need to remove in order to get the drum off??
thanks.

Mate,
did you remove the screw that holds the brake drum onto the axle flange.

If memory serves me correctly, after you remove the countersink head screw there are two threaded (8mm I think) holes that you can put a couple of jacking bolts into.
You have backed the brake shoes right off? When they wear the drum inside surface the ridge can get caught behind the shoes.

Hi. It is probable that the inside of the brake drum is worn from the shoes, causing a lip. You may need to adjust the brake shoes down to allow the lip to come over the shoes. Regards,Bob.

Thanks for replies. I am not sure if it is the standard drum because the hole on the drum does not line up with the one on the axle flange, so no screw there to undo. there are also no threaded holes to screw any bolts in, so it is prob down to wear. will check service manual on how to adjust shoes, any tips to help me on my way?
Cheers

Hi. You will need to shine a torchlight in through the adjuster slot and see if you can see the self adjuster arm. You should be able to either push the arm away from the star wheel or pull it away, depending on which side of the wheel it is. You will need to hold it away while at the same time turning the star wheel. You will have to work out which way it turns to loosen the shoes off. It should turn towards the flat side of the adjuster to loosen them. Bob.

thanks Bob. Could not see self adjuster arm, but managed to turn star wheel until tight (brakes locked on). Turned star wheel the other way until it spins fairly easy and the brakes are backed off, can still feel them catching slightly though?? Drum will wiggle a bit but still will not come off! angle grinder is looking tempting.. any more help/ideas please?

You need to keep undoing the adjuster untill the drum is free. Barnray

There are usually two holes in the face of the brake drum which are threaded you will need two bolts whith that same thread size and screw them in. First tighten one bolt a bit until you see the brake drum moving then tighten the other one . Keep going back and forth tightng one bolt then the other and as long as your bolts are as long as the depth of the brake drum it will come off.
