We are planning a trip to the Flinders Ranges at Easter next year. I am trying to work out the timing and the route. I want to come home from Cameron Corner via Bourke and back home after that. The drive times that I am seeing are 12 hours between Cameron Corner and Bourke. I appreciate that driving conditions can change at different times of year and even overnight, but the route planners seem to allow 50km/hour for these roads. Does this seem like an accurate average speed for these roads?
Thanks for your help.

Hullo Warb
Difficult to give a simple answer, as it will depend on what vehicle you are using, if you are towing a CT, weather conditions, etc and of course, when the road was last graded.
We travelled on the Cameron Corner to Tibooburra road as part of a day trip out from Tibooburra and then the Tibooburra to Bourke road - all about 3 months ago.
At that time, the section from the Corner to Tibooburra was in parts badly corrogated from the corner to Waka and improved the closer one got to Tibooburra. The section from Tibooburra to Wanaaring was OK, but the road from then on for most (2/3rds?) of the way to Bourke was a shocker! Badly corrogated sand with some wash aways.
[Note that the track through Fortville gate from the northern side is now a private track.]
For us, an average of 50kph is probably close to the mark as we were in an F250 with stiff leaf suspension and a dual axle van. But even if I had been using the LC with the Tvan, I wouldn't have gone much faster.
We stayed o/n at Wanaaring, camping down by the Paroo R and got into Bourke for lunch the following day. There was a lot of road kill along the side of the road, including a goat carcass being eaten by 4 pigs.
Of course, the Wanaaring - Bourke road could be OK if it had just had its once a year grade :-)
Cheers

G'day Warb,

last time I did the run from Tibooburra to Bourke was just after the road had been reopened after flooding.
It wasn't too bad but we had to keep our eyes open.
We left Tibooburra about 11:30 am and got to the Wanaaring Pub (Outback Inn) for lunch. We stopped at the pub for, at least, an hour. We got into Bourke by 6:30pm.

We were two vehicles, both 80 series, one towing a camper trailer and we had a flat tyre to change and a swim along the way.

The distance is 420 km and the drive time was about 5 hours. The road is the Cut Line and is a Dry Weather road. it gets hot and lonely out there. Be prepared for anything.

Here's a couple of pictures from there,

I hope that'll help you a bit.

Steve

I did Nyngan to Cameron Corner through Bourke and Tibooburra in a long 12 hour day. I stopped in Bourke, Wanaaring and Tibooburra for fuel and eats and a walk around. Not ideal but possible depending on the road conditions. It was quite slow through the stoney desert section closer to Tibooburra.

Thanks for all your thoughts. We'll be in a Prado 150 towing a CT, so it sounds like we should be able to average at least 50kph. It's always hard planning a timeline for a route on these kinds of roads! We need to be back to meet work and school commitments, so having an idea of travelling conditions means we can build some leeway in to our plans. Of course, that doesn't mean that it won't all have changed by the time we get there......

Hi Warb,

Did a similar route last year but in the opposite direction - its covered in a blog from 2011. Coming east from Cameron Corner to Tibooburra the road was very corrugated in places. East from Tibooburra you need to keep an eye on the weather - if you get rain you can end up like this and the roads will be closed pretty quickly.

While we were in Tibooburra ALL roads out of town were closed for about 24 hours.

Cant comment on driving times as we were taking our time, and road conditions can vary a lot.

Cheers,

Val
