I have just purchased a L/Rover D3 2.7TD. 2005 model. It has 255.55.R18 tyres on it.The hand book and the tyre placard on the vehicle states that it should have 255.60.R18 tyres.
Using the Explor Oz calculator the difference of the circumference of the 255.55 tyre is 80mm smaller, giving an actual speed of 96.54kph when 100kph is showing on the speedo.I noticed this as the G.P.S. I was using, showed an even larger discrepancy, possibly to the speedo being out in the first place.
I realise that it is permissible to have a larger circumference of up to 50mm, but with my smaller circumference of 80mm, is to me also outside the allowable difference as
well.
In other words is it permissible or not to go smaller than 50mm?
Is there anyone out there that is in the tyre industry that can comment?
If a vehicle is fitted with tyres that do not comply with the tyre placard specification, does this make the vehicle illegal?
Any comment greatly appreciated. Regards G.T.

I think the difference between 255/55R18 and 255/60R18 is only 25mm.
Strange that they fitted smaller tyres though.

It's 80mm circumference and 25mm diameter. Not sure of the legalities of going smaller but it's diameter that is mentioned in the regs.

Ah yes, should read more closely.
It will affect the speedo about 3%.

As a new Landrover owner I recommend you go to the Australian Landrover
forum
www.aulro.com and go to the rrs/d3/d4 section and there is a wealth of info there.
I have recently purchased a 2012 D4 in March and have just turned over 34,000 km and that has been up through the centre and West Australia. I have used the road to the Bungles and to
Chambers Pillar with no problems on Cooper LTZ 255/55/19 (No Punctures) I drove mindful of low profile. It is the most comfortable 4wd I have ever driven and has not had one problem.
Tyre sizes are critical for 2 reasons; firstly down at access height where a too larger tyre will rub; secondly to get the spare to fit in the
well without deflating, not forgetting the variations from standard allowed by various state regulations.
As you have the 2.7 you are able to use wheel sizes from 17" to 19" as you have smaller front brake discs. I have the 3.0 and I can only use the 19"
wheels due the huge discs. All this info is in AULRO.

Thanks for the replies. I have now found out that you can fit a tyre up to 15mm Dia larger, or down to 26mm smaller. That makes my tyres legal, which was my main concern. Have been on the AULRO
Forum , my tyres fit a R/R/ Sport. `V` speed rated! Don`t know if I would ever get close to getting up to that sort of speed!
Thanks again for the replies, Regards G.T.
