They would have to be working on the minium of filtration with these things wouldn't they?, saw one to-day for the first time at a work shop, and couldn't get over how little they are for the size of the motor,..Unless they are some super duper thing that filters down to 2microns, but can't see it, the service guy just shrugged his shoulders when questioned about it , just don't go over the service interval, Not to mention where its situated.

Cheers Axle.

And the factory recommend 20000km service intervals so they must be good. Changed one today on a car that had just finished it's warranty and had been dealer serviced. Out of 12 bolts that hold the two splash covers on, 8 had been cross threaded and two were missing. The cover over the sump drain had also been left off which gave me the impression that the oil may have been changed without the filter sometimes. Took me longer to repair all the threads than the rest of the service. Lucky for me, the owner was watching so I got paid for it. Cheers,Bob.

More "quality" work by Toyota stealer-ships.
I hope your customer takes the damage up with the stealer-ship involved.

IMHO, the biggest down side about buying a new toyota is that you have to deal with toyota dealer ships. Yes, there are a few good ones out there, but every Toyota dealership I have dealt with in Victoria has been dodgey in one way or the other where I have been billed for work that wasn't done or gerneral poor quality workmanship.

Of course, I won't mention the Victorian Toyota dealership that set themselves up as a "Training" organisation so they could sack most of their Australian staff and relace them with chinese "Trainees" on short term training visas.

Don't know about the 20k service intervals......

All Toyota Landcruisers are now 10k and the early 200 series that were 20k are now 10k.

G'day Bob,
I think you will find the service interval is 10,000K.......
& MAKE SURE the metal tube is removed from the 'old' filter & installed (correctly) on the new filter.
My understanding of oil filter design & construction in todays modern engines is with the element type filter as opposed to the all metal spin on/off type there is less landfill, easier to dispose of & off course cheaper to produce!

Just commenting on Toyota saying the filter is/was OK for 20k. If they have revised there interval down to 10k then all credit to them. I always recomend to my customers, good quality oil,12mths or 10k service intervals. Unless it is an old clunker which we service more often.Bob

I have the same problem with my Prado (120 D4).
The OME filter, albeit Ryco, is a tiny thing, smaller than the previous engine model.

After a bit of research, I found another filter, bigger with the same thread.

I may be old fashioned but the bigger the filter the more surface area and the better the filtration.

All filters have a drain back valve so there is no problem with keeping the pressure up.

Hi Bill. Just be aware that the Ryco no,Z418 does not really cross over to the Prado filter, rather it goes to the genuine Camry V6 no. The Prado no. is YZZ-D4 which is slightly bigger than the Camry. Cheers,Bob

A filter doesn't have to be big to filter and bigger is not better, it comes down to how restrictive they are after a given time and obviously the Toyota ones aren't.

New CRD engines run much cleaner then to old dinosaur engines of yesterday hence why older engines had big filters and the newer smaller.

The oil filter will not filter down to 2 micron, if they did you would not get no oil through..... the fuel filter does.

Toyota Dealership Let Down:
I have a classic Toyota story from Canberra. I put my Toyota 76 V8 series in for 110,000 service at a local Toyota Dealership a few days ago.
The major components for this service is a wheel roation/balance and oil change and filter.
I had my suspisions that the tyres were not rotated at the last service, so marked one of them this time. Sure eneogh no rotation despite being on the reciept, I found this extremely dishonest.
The customer service was poor and the quote I had over the phone was $150 more upon arrival, which I refused to pay.
The service was poor and I supplied the oil but still got the toyota oil sticker put on the windscreen and I also have my doubts that they have changed the oil filter!!
I am off them and will not take my Toyo back to a Toyota dealership again. I have lost trust in them.

Regards Will

Modern motors have smaller oil filters to reduce the time the need to get up to pressure on startup. Plus what olcoolone says, they don't dump as much carbon into the oil so don't need big filters.
Stick with the genuine filters and you won't go far wrong.

Hey, axle, isn't yours a petrol? :-)
