hi ,i have read up few questions on 3f engines,i have one in my 80 series landcruiser and had few ups and downs over last 6 months, from blockage in fuel tank to fuel pump and dissy, since then i put electronic fuel pump, electronic dissy. i got fuel system flushed out . the engine has done 460 000klm and compression is 180 in every pot, doesn't burn oil.when i had point system in , it did run good ,fired up very strong when started first time every time, yet points dissy as cruiser is 23yrs old and dissy making alot noise and timing was up and down so bought electronic dissy ,local mechanic put it in and set every thing up eg,tappet adjustment , timing at 7 degrees before top dead center etc,yea idles smoother but seems lacking in power to it use to be before point system started to break down due to age n wear and tear ,i said to mechanic was dissy put in right? i only asked cos i set engine up on top dead center and apparently the rotor button should point to number one on dissy, mine points to number five which is one over clockwise ,she drives ok but i have to push down on the excellerater more than before to get similar acceleration, uses bit more fuel .does any one have any ideas and if the dissy is out would this give me lack in power, also has any one had any problems using /putting in electronic dissy and is the timing on point system different on electronic dissy ? sorry for rambling on ,i really need help working this out and living on gold coast last two years ,dont know a decent mechanic or performance place that can sort this .
kind regards paul

Hi paul p8

Firstly you should go to www.lcool.org and join up its free. There is a pile of info there in the various tech forums. You can search for info or ask your question in the 80 series forum. You should get some informative replies. Secondly it sounds that your dissy is not installed correctly, I have not had any experience with these engines so I can't be of any more help. My experience with dissy's is limited to holden red motors.

I second dindy's comment, if you own an 80 series lcool is the way to go for help.

Hi Paul
From memory (being a very long time since I have replaced a dissy) you are correct in that the rotor button should point to cyl No 1 on the cap at the TDC position - however No 1 cyl needs to be on the compression stroke not the exhaust stroke, so you would need to ensure that both the inlet & ex valves were in the closed position.

If it starts and idles fine it's probably installed and timed correctly. However the new distributor might not have a large enough advance curve. I'd add a couple more degrees static timing, reset the idle speed, and then take it for a run checking for pinging under load. Depending on the type of electronic distributor you might be able to program it's curve.

And another thought - at those KM it has probably lost a fair bit of the cam profile thus providing less lift.
