Many of you would have met and admired Merv Ploger, the blind mechanic from Windorah.

Well Merv has finally called it a day. The place won't be the same without him.

The full story is on the ABC here.

Cheers

Rats!
I'd heard of him a quite a few years ago but had no idea where he was until he were in Windorah 2 months ago...
Saw Merv sitting on the seat outside the door. Hubby did the fuel routine while I stayed in the car and did the usual budget recording.
Hubby pumped the fuel and then went to pay. Merv says "Suppose that's on plastic?" as hubby stood before him with 2 $50 notes... hubby catches on. Has to tell him what his money was, how many litres. Merv does the sums mentally and agrees.
Hubby tells me about it all as we're on our way out of town. Damn-I've missed witnessing a simple Aussie travellers' legend.

We also saw Merv a few months back, and it was about 44 in that shade that day! I must get very hot there in the middle of summer. Had a small nut glued to the 5 on the eftpos machine.

He is an incredible person. From repairing tyres to the trust he had in people.

One amazing human being

We stopped in there last September.

It was windy all day and I said to Merv that I was sick of the wind. Dry as anything he said, "I don't mind it, as long as they're driving into it, towing their big caravans".

Does anyone know where he's retired to?

Steve

Thanks for posting this.
Been there a couple of times; what a great little place.

One would get fuel and the lady would ask how much did you get and she never came out to check if I was being honest.

Great people, great place and a great pub across the road.
JS.

You can say a lot about Windorah, but one thing's for sure..........the town won't be quite as dry without Merv's sense of humour. LOL

.

Warning about Windorah.
Super little town with great little van park and tops pub. Seriously considered staying a second night just to rest a bit longer in such a nice little park and to do another dinner in the pub...
But...be careful. A house on the main street oppsite the van park entrance has a small dog and owners who regularly go away "for a few days", according to the nice council lady who came to collect our fees. The poor dog howls literally all night.
It was not only disconcerting for us (we had our small dog with us and worried all night that our other dozen or so neighbouring vans would think it was ours!!), but it was also a grey lining on the silver cloud.
Take ear plugs if you may perhaps stay in Windorah.

Yes! Merv caught me off guard on my way out from Emerald to Birdsville to do the ANZAC parade with Sully and the guys. He of course knew Sully (who threw me off the wing of a De-Havilland Domonie on first & second jumps). Who doesn't? Filled up on way back too. Great cabins in the kind of side street. Great meals at hotel. Back to Merv. I could hardly believe he had such impaired vision. He had just finished fitting four 4x4 new tyres. Now I know why they have raised lettering on the sidewalls. (Sorry Merv)

we bought fuel from him in July - it was .3c/lt cheaper than the shop virtually next door so guess they may be the only people happy to see him gone
