Help with Landcruiser Gearbox noise

Hello,
My Toyota Landcruiser ute (HZJ79) has suddenly developed a high pitched whine coming somewhere from the drive train. I was driving and noticed that the speedometer had stopped working. About 3 days later I noticed a whine coming from under the vehicle. It is noticeable at speeds above 20 Km/Hr and increases in pitch the faster I go. As soon as I heard the noise I looked under the vehicle to see the Speedo takeoff unit dangling and out of its hole. There was oil in the transfer case but some had leaked out as the level was lower than it should be. There are no other noises or rattles and the car shifts in all 5 gears OK. The box is only 100,000 Kms old and the mechanics don't know what is causing the noise. They have changed the oil and put in an additive but to no avail. The mechanics who installed the box don't seem to want to take responsibility for the speedo unit falling out, which it appears to me to have caused this problem.
Has anyone suffered a similar problem to this? Any ideas gratefully received.

Hi mate,
was the transfer replaced or just the gearbox? Why would they have warranty on a box that has done 100000km? Did they get any particles of metal or plastic in the oil when they drained it? I would put the vehicle up on jack stands with it running in gear and climb under it to try to isolate the noise. It might not be the transfer case just a coincidence that the speedo drive came out.
Cheers,

The car had done 305,000 Kms. The gearbox had a problem that could not be fixed so a box out of a vehicle that had only done 95,000 kms was fitted. There was a short warranty period but that has now expired. There were no metal or other particles found in the oil that was drained out of the transfer case or the gearbox. I don't think it is the gearbox, the only oil that was lost was from the transfer case. If it is the differential then it is one hell of a co-incidence.
Thanks for your reply, you're right, the next thing to do would be to put it on a hoist or jack stands and hear where exactly the noise is coming from.

Is it definitely drive train related? Have you tried increasing rpms whilst not moving?

I had a wine in a 75 series that took a whille to locate and it apparantly turned out to be the power steering pump.

yes it is drive train related. When I put it into neutral and the vehicle slows down the noise lowers in pitch as my speed decreases. The sound also reflects any juddering or jerky accelerations.
Thanks for your reply.

Gary,
Just to be clear, are you saying that the vehicle has done 100,000 k's or that the box was repaired 100,000 k's ago and the speedo drive has just fallen out?

Unfortunetly this answer can't be googled, so go to a propper mechanic and put it on a hoist, the mechanic should have some ear phone that attatch to various parts of the car, this will enable him to go directly to the problem.

My bet crown wheel and pinion rear diff.

Yes that would be the next thing to do. As I said above, if it is the diff, then it is one hell of a co-incidence.
