Can anyone please tell me how many drive belts are fitted to a 120 series turbo diesel engine (pre D4D).
I seem to have provision for 3 belts on the front of the engine but only have 2 belts, 1 driving the alternator and 1 driving the aircon.
The spare belt groove on the front of the engine looks shiny and I also note that I have a spare belt groove on the front of the alternator which is also shiny.
It looks like I have thrown a belt but cant see why the alternator would have 2 belts driving it.
Cheers,
Cruiser

That could be for the rubber band to drive the rear
wheels ha ha.
Which belt includes the power steer? Some alternators use a second belt to cope with greater load, ie lights etc.

I was under the impression the power steer pump is on the back of the alternator, which may explain why there is an extra belt, however the steering seems normal.
Not to worry, I will take it to the mechanic on Monday to see what the go is.

Many diesels have a vacuum pump on the back of the alternator, not sure about a power steer pump. Unlikely.
Many modern CRD engines Colorado/Dmax have the power steering driven from an engine drive and it is bolted into/onto the engine and does not sit on a bracket as in previous designs and doesn't rely on a belt for it's drive.
A quick look will tell you where the powers steer lines go to.
If you have a few shiny V grooves inline with each other then you have lost a belt.
Make sure you buy a matched pair for this and DO NOT just replace one, as they then won't each take similar loading and again one will fail prematurely.

All belts were replaced in January prior to our 25000k trip this year but to be honest I cannot see what else the spare groove drives. As said earlier I will take it to the mechanic Monday
Just thought someone might look under their bonnet and give me an idea just what the third belt does.

There should be 2 belts driving the alternator (the 2 belts are bought as a matched set) so you have lost 1

This is correct, I just checked under the bonnet and 2 drive the alternator and 1 drives the a/c.

A closer look this morning revealed that the damaged belt was sitting on top of the front sump guard in 3 pieces.
Off to the auto parts
shop to get new belts. The book said I needed part # 13A1005 so some $35 later I am off back home to try to fit the new belts.
The tensioners are fully loosened but try as much as I can I cannot get the remaining belt off. Out with the pinch bar and finally I can remove the remaining belt and buggar me dead if its not a 13A1015 which is naturally longer than the pair I have just purchased, so I head off to swap them over.
At the store I check the flip chart again and it definitely says 13A1005. OK, better buy a pair of 13A1015 and go home and see what happens. Guess what, they do so it seems the flip chart is WRONG.
I have rung the store to tell them and they say they will pass on the info to the relevant manufacturer tomorrow.
In hindsight I should have removed the remaining belt first and then I would have bought the right ones in the first place.
Oh
well, job done and V8's are on. See ya

I had a problem with the AC belt picked from the flip chart.
It was too long and the tensioner would not take up. Luckily I replaced them before I left as I would have had no chance of fixing them on the side of the road.
I was sold (from a auto leccy in
Katherine) a 'green' belt. He had to go down two sizes to get one to fit from standard. The 'green' ones are supposed to be a better type of belt. Can't remember why.
Pays to check sizes, especially if you are taking a spare set.
The D4D series are interesting, as they have an endless belt. Have not got around to pricing them or getting a lesson on how to fit them yet.
