I have received my Ranger and one of the first things I noticed is the side steps don't protect the sills.
All of us would have suffered this on any vehicle that runs on gravel roads. Both my old Troopy's sills were hammered and the buckets of puss I owned before that I couldn't care less.

Now this vehicle is different. Cost an arm and a leg so I wish to look after it.

Cost to do this was very small. I had the 90mm downpipe plus the stainless bar and welding rods. I had to buy the 6mm stainless booker rod for the brackets and I had the paint and stainless welding rods.

This whole exercise cost $4.60 for the booker rod, $1.70 for the nylock nuts and $16 for the underbody pain and my time.

Here are some photo's of a simple way to stop stone damage with this style of side step.

Hope this will help someone.

Yep I see that the other photos didn't arrive. Stolen I suspect.

No I don't see a problem with mud or dirt as they can be flushed very easily. They are open from the front to the back and will be easily cleaned. I will try another photo now.

thanks that better yes they should do the job and are cheap to replace if they got broken
those half channels could be used to carry tent poles with quick ties around them or maybe a row of cans or beer lol

Howz it going Rockape

Your Ranger cost you an arm and a leg ??

Mate - where you live and what you do that shouldn't be a problem as you earn 3 arms and 5 legs ! ( lol )

What Ranger did you get ?

I've got 12.000 klicks on my XLT Supercab and LOVE IT !

Great idea you came up with - simple and cheap sill protectors that when painted the right colour no one would notice them.

All the best

Gazz,

I have the same ute as yours. Choose it due to the kids being grown up now with only the 2 of us.

With the side steps installed you don't notice the protectors at all and the rocks should just bounce off the pvc pipe. A 6m length of pipe is under $10 so all you need is jigsaw and a plane. I actually tapped the plate and then screwed the booker rod in and welded the studs to stop them turning. They come up from the bottom so nothing can damage the threads or nuts.

The funny thing is although I live in Mackay I have never worked around here or in coal. Retired now so I don't have to go underground anymore. I don't miss that one bit.

Have a good one,
RA.
