I know I'm going to be told that there are previous threads covering this topic, BUT I can't find them. Just dumb.
Want to meet up with some relatives from
Townsville on the Murray over Christmas.
I'm told that the total
population of
Melbourne and their ski boats all move to the Murray at this time of year. We originally planned to go to somewhere around Tocumwall/
Echuca. But a Victorian caravanner said go to somewhere between
Swan Hill &
Mildura.
We are basically self contained and don't need power or
toilets etc. but would like to experience some peace & quite.
Any helpers?
Regards
PeterM

Hard to find isolated spots that time of year, but 3 spots I can recommend are Christies Beach just out of
Echuca,Scott's Beach -Cobram,Nyah Rec Reserve just behind the trotting track. All are on the banks of the
Murray River all have some facilities but if you ars self contained all the better.Don't be put off by over
population reports its a big area with plenty of other good spots. Just be aware of falling tree limbs from the river gums. Good Luck john y

We lived down there for 10 years. Stinking hot in summer but always seemed bearable in the forest by the Murray...
Highly recommend where we lived, on Gunbower Island. Drive to Cohuna, left at the roundabout onto Gunbower Island...
About 7km along Island Road, near Daltons Bridge, there's an entrance into the forest. There's a main track that goes through the forest and many more branch out into the many campsites. Yes, it's popular, but for a reason, and there are many spots in here to choose from. Gunbower Island is about 50km long if I recall correctly, so there are many opportunities to find something.
We used to drive in and have a campfire and just sit and enjoy the beauty of it all and we miss it a lot. Only downside: river levels are low in summer so it can be a bit of a climb down to the
water, but there's usually a track that's dug into the bank at each
camp site...
Swan Hill area is definitely better for river access, but that makes it even busier.
Because the river is low along here in summer, there are no skiers. It's quiet between Torrumbarry Weir and Barham Bridge, and for a fair way on the other side of Barham towards
Swan Hill.
A lot of skiers in this area head to
Lake Boga and Lake Charm.
It doesn't rain over Christmas so access is always good.
Cohuna has over 2,000 people so the shops are pretty good.
Well, we haven't been there for 10 years now, but you know country towns...I doubt if anything's changed...!
