Following on from the total solar eclipse around Cairns on Nov 14th 2012, Australia will experience another solar eclipse less than 6 months later. This is a once in a lifetime occurence as the last time Oz had consecutive total and annular eclipses was 1871 and it won't happen again until 2194. One could revisit FNQ and the western Cape at Kowanyama where they saw a 2 min totality this year and will have a 4.5 min annularity in 2013.
The tarred Stuart Hwy 70 km north of Tennant Creek is on the eclipse centreline and also has 4min 30 sec of the moon obscuring 97% of the sun.
On the CSR well 19 is the place to be as it is only a few km off the centre line and has a 4min 13 sec event with the sun only 3 degrees above the horizon, having risen as a crescent as it will be nearly 90% covered.
Back on the tar about 100km south of Newman on the Northern Hwy at the Lofty Range the sun will rise at 6.30 am as a deep red uneven circle of light as annularity begins. Over the next 2 minutes the sun rises higher into the sky by it's own width as the moon becomes centred over the solar disc making the annulus an even ring. 2 more minutes and the moons edge touches the lower limb of the sun as annularity ends. All this is subject to the moon illusion in which both sun and moon appear much bigger to the eye than when high in the sky. Over the next hour the moon then leaves the solar disc and it's all over by 7.46am. Link to NASA eclipse site: http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogle/SEgoogle2001/SE2013May10Agoogle.html

Muz, when it comes to eclipses, it's along time between drinks. This one's only an annular but I missed the 1991 event in Perth or Tassie. Hopefully I'll be ticking this one off the bucket list. Ilgarari Hill next to the Northern Hwy could be the place to be. Quirky name anyway! And then it's only 10 years till the next total ( 1min only) in 2023 at Cape Range NP and Ningaloo Reef LOL....

Sounds like a good excuse for another Canning trip all right Warrie. thanks for making us aware well in advance.

I recently got a 5 inch refractor - better get a sun filter for it now I guess.

I'd hate to think what those Canning corrugations will do to sensitive optical equipment. Ouch!...

Now an enterprising bloke would be setting up campsites and a viewing area complete with deck chairs at Well 19 Warrie. You'd even consider table service but the thought of Outback Al and Equinox in their best safari suits isn't doing a lot for me at this stage. Methinks there will be a fair crowd planning a trip now that you've bought it to everyone's attention. It should be great! I had Equinox here in Melbourne for a few days on his way home from the FNQ eclipse and he was pumped after the whole experience.

I trust it all goes well for you. I'd love to be out that way to witness it but due to the Crown Prince's 18th, I'm heading out a little later this year and intend being in the area towards late July. Hopefully you'll have posted a photo or two of your exploits by the time I leave.

Cheers Mick

P.S. If that Muzbry turns up, watch out for your cold beer. Between he and Bonz, well you know the story!!!

We've been planning this for over 12 months.

Got some nice pics in Port Douglas this year.

Refer this link.

We are planning to be at 22.489 S / 125.051 E right on the center line on the Jenkins Track between the Gary Jct Road and the CSR. We are coming in from Alice Springs then will head north on the CSR near well 33

Hopefully will not be as crowded as Port Douglas but would welcome fellow eclipse nerds.
