Savannah Option Cairns to Normanton via Dunbar

Hi fellow travellers, Am in the stages of planning our Savannah Way trip starting from home (Cairns). There is an option via Chillagoe, Wrotham Park, Dunbar then south to Kurumba. This appeals but virtually no information on this option - not even in Camps 6 for a camp spot. Party of 3 vehicles, one towing small off road van, the other car also a 4x4 and one Subaru Forrester AWD, the latter two camping not towing.

Anyone done this option, thinking of camping on the Mitchell River near to Dunbar. Understand we will have to take fuel. Is road O.K. for caravan and Forrester (higher clearance and AWD vehicle)

Hi,

What time of year are you looking at doing the trip? This more than anything will determine whether it is achievable or not. To my knowledge after Chillagoe there are no specific campsites, but there are plenty of creeks / rivers where you should be able to stop for the night if required (crocs shouldn't be an issue til you're closer to the coast, but keep them in mind!)

Most of this route is dirt and is quite isolated. This time of year (as you'd be aware) we're coming into the wet season, the rains when they come can and will close the roads, and you may find some water over the road in the hollows (probably not suitable for the Forrester).

On the other hand during the dry the roads are actually quite easy to travel (even in a falcon / commodore) and the weather will be much more pleasant! (I'm sitting in the AC watching the thermometer climb past 44 degrees in the shade)

Fuel is available in Chillagoe, and if I've followed you route correctly from there it's a bit less than 600km to Karumba. When I did this trip I filled up in Chillagoe and had no issues getting to Normanton.

Be aware of the standard corrugations and livestock on the roads, but otherwise enjoy the trip!

Anthony, Silly me, I forgot to include the date which is VERY impotant. As it will be our departure day, I know it already. Monday July 29th 2013. My calc's are similar to yours so 1 x Gerry of petrol for the Forrester should see him through. We will have two 4WD's for support if required.

I think a road check the day before and being prepared to free camp on the Mitchell river will see us through. Do you remember any good spots on the river Ant ?

Hope you survive the heat, it is not that hot in Cairns. Doing a 4 WD exercise tomorrow on the "Bloomfield Track" as new to camping and 4 WD'ing. No van tomorrow, just the Triton as a day trip.

If you are doing a practice run up the Bloomfield, stop in at Home Rule near Rossville, 3km off the road. Stay overnight for $10 a head, great swimming hole but best of all 45 min walk to Home Rule Falls. With any luck all the hippie types from the eclipse will be gone although they were no problem, added to the experience. Went there last week when my brother came up from Brisbane.
Also took in Maytown, from the turnoff a great 80km drive to the Palmer crossing, the last 10km to Maytown slow going, not maintained just a track. Palmer dry so didn't camp there.

Triton Man - there's a very nice bush camp spot just where the Sav Way crosses the Lynd River - on the western side. Nice clear are with views of the Lynd crossing.

Just be careful in the bush behind - a bit of 'camper confetti' there...

Stayed in Chillagoe around August of this year.

Just a tip when getting your fuel.

I found at the time that the fuel depot, where the Guy with the Ford Vehicles collection is, was about 10 or so cents cheaper per litre for deilsel than the fuel places right in town.

Cheers

Thanks guys, you are all helpfull and I apreciate your help, looks like the trip via Dunbar will be possible with 1 x gerry can for the Forrester and the 4WD have extra tanks anyway. I knew about the Shell depot and that guy who has all those cars, thanks for the reminder, have made a written note of it.

Bloomfield track was DRY and only one small river crossing so no challenges. For the record, the caravan park owner at Ayton said the road was at its best ever at the moment. It was only meant as a day trip (350 km return) so did not get to "Home Rule", maybe another day when it gets cooler.

Regards

As Anthony said its a good drive, and that time of the year should be dry enough to get through.

Before you get to Dunbar there aquite a few lagoons on either side of the road, in a bit but you can see some of them.

The camp on the Mitchell can be a bit sandy as you get closer to the river, a 4WD not towing would be better to go in and have a look first.

Hi TM,

In addition to other observations already noted, I would add that you need to very carefully consider whether you wil be crossing the Mitchell R via Dunbar. A very long, soft sandy crossing that can cause anguish. We had a good look a few years ago, thought it do-able and got stuck in sand before even getting to the water, tyre pressures already dropped etc etc, so then extracted ourselves and camped the night before a detour next morning.

Rgds,

Rob.

Is that the crossing where the station owner will extract you for $1000, or is it the Alice crossing?

No need to cross the Mitchell River any where on the road, you only have to do that if you head north from Dunbar.

You might encounter a few patches of bull dust if there have been a lot of cattle road trains coming out otherwise its just an average 2WD road.

Watch out for roos, goannas and BIG black pigs. Lots of cattle on the road also.

As for camping spots just find a patch of trees and pull off the road.

You might see a bit of traffic either end of the road but the stretch from Gamboola to Dunbar will be pretty quiet.

Hi Triton,

I did this track mid last month.
It hadn't really started to rain yet so all the crossings were dry and easy. The Gilbert had a bridge over it.

Heaps of funny looking birds, cane toads and pigs to see.

A pretty easy track in the dry, I saw a couple of sedans at the Karumba end.

Cheers

Hi Equinox, Thanks for the Follow up. Would appreciate your advice on suitability of our friends travelling in a lightly loaded Subaru Forrester on this route. This is the first leg of a 2 vehicle (2 x Triton 4 x 4's) convoy to Broome. Friends want to accompany us as far as Normanton and then return on the easy way home (black top) to Cairns via Georgetown. The Forrester has a slightly higher clearance than most sedans and is an AWD vehicle and we would be in company with limited recovery gear if needed. Also, one Triton towing an Avn Aliiner. Want to overnight somewhere on the Mareeba to Kurumba leg, any good spots come to mind?? Time of year will be end of July.

Hi TM,

A high clearance vehicle would not be required in dry conditions. The vehicles you mention will get through with no dramas.

I camped about 30 kilometres east of Dunbar, just followed a track that led to the Mitchell River and camped at the first good spot I found (swag, no fire). Anywhere along that stretch of road would be Ok.

Cheers
