Wonder if anyone can shed any light on an issue that I having with my Garmin 1490T that I purchased in January 2011?
I purchased it because it said that this unit comes with lifetime map updates.
So I took the unit home and registered it as instructed.
I even purchased the Australia Topo map for it.
The issue is that whenever I connecedt the unit and search the Garmin site for map updates with my unit connected I am asked for payment. I put this in the too hard basket and didn't bother with updates as the unit runs fine.
I tried again yesterday and still asking for payment.
I rang Garmin up and was told that this was is a promotion and I had to put in a claim for the free updates. (like a cashback)
I disputed this, wasn't given a form to fill in when I purchased and as far as I know all I had to do was register the unit.
Their response was to to email the manager in Garmin promotions.
I'm still waiting for a reply
Can anyone shed any light on what their experience is in getting the free lifetime map updates that Garmin so clearly advertise and promote?
Cheers Dean

I think their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. I have emailed them before about this and never heard back. Yes like you my next unit will not be a Garmin.

Hi Boys
Yes there were free lifetime maps providing that you followed the on line registration, including a copy of your proof of purchase, showing the price you paid and the model of the unit that you purchased.
I did
mine well over 12 months ago, received my reply within 2 weeks and have since received a number of updates.
Cheers

You are having the same problem as I did when I didn't read the instructions on the paperwork I got.
There is a promotions site that you have to register the purchase on the redemption site
Redemption site

Sadly I didn't get any paperwork from the dealer. I just thought it was automatic once I had registered the unit, as did the sales person when I asked.

All you need is a receipt and your GPS serial No. You need to scan your receipt in as
well as the serial number and email it to them after you have completed your redemption claim on the web site. You need to do it before 31st Dec.

Looks like they are coming to the party and issuing me with a new code. So a happy ending after all.

If I remember correctly you also had to download the lifetime map updater and this could be done once you had your lifetime maps code.
