On the 8th December 1862, Flags were at half mast, shops were closed and hundreds of people lined Main North Road to show their respect as Alfred Howitt lead a convoy of horses and camels into
Clare with the remains of Burke and Wills.
One Hundred and Fifty years later to the day, the people of
Clare are again showing their respects as a cavalcade of horses and camels will travel again through
Clare and District to mark this special historic event.
Members from the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia will also be in
Clare as part of the Celebrations.
It all kicks off tonight with our annual Christmas Pageant, and at 8am tomorrow, the Party will leave
Bungaree Station, 10
miles north of
Clare and retrace those same tracks from 150 years ago.
So if you are in the area or would like to take part in this very special event, come along and be part of this every special day in the history of
Clare.
See you there.
Cheers
Stephen
