you eat the bear
I have just bought a brand new laptop with Windows 8 and USB 3 port.
OziExplorer has installed fine from my old laptop but for some reason my USB GPS is not being recognised on the new one, even after running Troubleshooter and several re-boots.
If anyone else has had similar problems - can you advise if/how you fixed this? It would be much appreciated.
Thanks (in hopeful anticipation)
Steve

Have you configured the communications setup in OziExplorer and set the comm port that the GPS is running on.

Yes I have done all that but the problem lies with the driver or another part of the operating system - the laptop can't see the GPS and the COM port isnt being picked up by OziExplorer at all...
From further investigation, it may be that the chipset in the GPS doesnt support the Windows 8 driver out of the USA which may mean buying a new GPS (bad news!)

Have you checked the GPS manufacturers web site to see if they have a windows 8 driver.

This is a GPS Mouse BU-353 USB.
The PL2303 Prolific driver (also available through the Exploroz website) is for Windows 7.
It doesn't seem to work with Windows 8.............

Aa Ha,
Mr Gates strikes again.
A lot of existing software wont work in Windows 7 let alone Windows 8. Its a way of Microsoft getting software manufacturers to conform to their standards and not vice versa.
A lot of smaller companies with industry based software are still using XP because of this.

As said above about incompatible with Windows 8. But before you give up you may care to try using a USB 2 port instead of the USB 3. You should also have one of these on your laptop. Then with a bit of luck use the Windows 8 compatibility program to try and get around the problem.

I think the problem with drivers is that they work at such a low level in the system that I don't think it's possible to run a driver in compatibility mode, maybe you could try uninstalling the whole lot including drivers then re-installing the whole thing running the install routine in compatibility mode.

Thanks for all that feedback.
I have tried the USB 2 port - same result.
Looks like a warning to all unfortunately. Don't rush into new technology...

A bluetooth gps is around $60 on ebay and doesn't need special drivers or cords. I use one on my laptop and it's lasted years. My son has a Windows 8 laptop I can check it with if you like?

It is official - I don't understand computers.
I rolled back the device driver (which didn't work) and checked the USB2 port.
Now the GPS (which doesn't work with Windows 8 according to the manufacturer) is working beautifully with OziExplorer.
Whuh???
Anyway, thanks to all for your thoughts and assistance.
Now, I just leave it all alone.....
