I have a 2000 model Mitsubishi Pajero 4x4,with 220,000k's on the clock, towing a tent trailer. It is Ok on the flat but slows down a lot going up hills. I want to upgrade to a small caravan, but I am concerned the Pajero will have even more trouble on hills etc. The radiator temperature is OK and does not change.
What should I do?,
Should I check the compression and can I replace the rings on the motor, would that help.
I can't afford a new vehicle.
Regards
Beau

Is it the 3.5 Petrol or 2.8 diesel? If it's the petrol then you have a problem, if it's the diesel then all may be
well.
Either way I would just take to to a mechanic that knows Pajeros to get a tune up, service and check over.

BooBook,...How do you arrive at that?...Either could have the same problem!... And being a petrol will probably be less expense.
Cheers Axle.

Axle what I mean is that the 2.8 diesel may slow down with a camper up a
hill even out of the factory so all may be ok. Where as the 3.5 petrol has quite a bit of power, and if it was struggling with a camper up a
hill then it would seem that there is something wrong.
Either way no one will be able to diagnose if there is a fault or not, and what fault there may be on a
forum, especially this one! Hence the recommendation to go see a mechanic.

The petrol motor is a good motor and 220,000 should not be a problem unless it has been mistreated.
I understand that these motor can have cracked exhaust manifolds which may reduce power. Should hear a ticking noise or similar
A tune up including fuel filter, plugs etc might be all it needs.

Seeing you have very limited mechanical knowledge I would take it to some one who has before drawing at straws....... it may be a simple problem like a blocked muffler/catalytic converter or compressed exhaust.
...... maybe a blocked air cleaner, when was the last time that was changed/checked/cleaned.
Maybe a good service by someone in the know may help.
It never seems to amaze me at work when a car comes in with a light on the dash..... we ask the customer about it and we get a reply of " it's been like it for ages, I put a piece of paper over it and it doesn't bother me."

A few years ago I felt my 02 Rodeo TD was losing power, I had the foot to the floor and was struggling up hills. I was getting progressively worse.
Turned out the accelerator assembly in the cabin had a sort of pulley system, fastened to the bulkhead by spot welds only, which had let go after several
Cape York trips and corrugations.
So as I pressed the accelerator I was pulling the assembly from the bulkhead rather than increasing the throttle. A drill and a couple of bolts fixed it, but it sure had me fooled for a while.
