g'day all,
just getting ready to take the kiddies away for xmas in the coaster, only thing is it is a 1979 model with a 186 engine and only a 4 speed box.
It seems to me to be reving high(about 5000rpm @80k)
Does anyone know where i can get a 5 speed box? I have checked wreckers, gumtree, ebay etc all to no avail.
Thanks for any help
Cheers

Are you sure the Clutch isn't slipping?

The coaster wouldn't rev that high in top. I used to drive one way back then and It would hit 120 on a good day. So 5000revs at 80 just doesn't seem right.

Also be aware that a lot of the older Coasters had a very low "city" diff ratio which will be exactly like yours is.
There was a higher "highway" ratio available as a retro fit.

seeing as how its already bastardised with a 186 motor, have you thaught about an alternative gearbox...I know the linkages will be different, but a hilux box should be up to what a 186 can produce in power and torque.
After all a 2.7 litre fuel injected 4 cylinder out of a recent hilux produces way more power than a 186.

Almost without exception all 4 speed boxes the top gear is direct 1:1 so it aint ya gearbox to blame for the high revs.....first stop is change the diff, that should be cheaper and easier than changing the gearbox.

remember the early coasters where pretty gutless, hence the low diff and the popularity at the time of the 186 conversion.

cheers
