Hi,

I see there is a car dealer in Brisbane (don't know if its a Toyota dealer or not) selling brand new 2012 models Toyota Landcruiser styleside utes with a 4.2 litre non-turbo diesel engine for $66,000. Since when have these been available?

Don't think it's a Toyota dealer as the emissions from this engine do not comply with Aussie emission requirements....and most of the world.
Must be a grey import....but did not think they could bring in new ones.....someone else will confirm or correct this issue.
Would be a good truck to have.

Here is a link to the Carpoint ad

Toyota Styleside Landcruiser

Interesting that half the ad says it is a 4.2 but on the spec sheet it says V8.

Photos definitely show a pretty basic 4.2 non turbo with a single battery setup.

Be interested to see if it was plated for Australia

Thanks Lyn for putting up the link.
You would have to assume the hand written comments are correct (4.2 litre, non turbo etc). The spec sheet probably comes from the carpoint database and probably doesn't have details for this specific model.
Interesting
Cheers

If you look at the photos of the engine compartment there doesn't appear to be ANY plates attached to the firewall.

If anyone is interested be very wary of insurance, registration & import plate {blue plate} fitted and appropriate import papers,
cheers Mark.

Grey import possibly was destined for a minesite
Personally I think it's poor value for money

You would save money on fuel and oil. Has one of Toyotas best diesels....just under powered.
Price is certainly a bit steep.

From what I have read the 4.2 non turbo model was released in Africa. The car, chassis and all is the same as the V8 except they put the old motor in as I think was requested for that market. They can do this in developing countries as they are not required to have the same emission standards at this time.

You will also note there is no scoop on the bonnet.

I think an individual can bring their own car at a cost into Austalia so it would be considered second hand albeit near new. Why would they bother? And who in the Australian market would want it?

I have seen quite a few of these on the Olympic Dam Mining site at Roxby Downs. The mining company evidently imports them directly from Toyota & uses them mainly underground.
These utes are then scrapped when they reach the end of their service life. Australian design rules does not allow for this model to be sold to the general public, or to be road registered in Australia.

Here is the full story..............................

They imported two of these units complete with a VIA but they COULD NOT be registered as they had no ADR plates.

Both units were sold to a mine site and the ad was really only posted to see if there was any more interest.

This has been ongoing for the last half of this year in WA with a number of minesites importing them from SA. They are being imported due to problems with the current V8 T/Back when operating on the minesites - especially underground. They are imported as 2nd hand and when finished will be scrapped. They do not and were never intended to be made available to the public. regards
Slow down and relax......

Couple of years ago, a bloke told me Xstrata were talking about importing some of these SA 6 cyl utes into Australia, because they weren't happy with the V8s. Never heard anymore on the outcome.

As mentioned in a previous thread, I've seen Mahindra utes, in mining specs, heading into western Qld.

Those styleside bodies were all the go, when I was in the East Kimberley, back in the late '60's and early '70's. All the Stock Inspectors used them, and other goverment depts, as well as many stations. It was only once bullcatchers started using tray backs, on long wheel base utes(for recovering bulls out of heavy sand country) that the stations started to opt for traybacks as well. The stylesides were good, but any heavy loads, like full drums of Avgas, could only be loaded at the rear. They were quite a bit lighter too, than a trayback.

Bob.

I believe they are imported into Australia by Toyota and are available to Mine dealers.

Had to look at one about 3 years ago for Denso to see if we could manufacture some stuff for it...... they ended up importing the stuff from South Africa.

$66 grand seems a bit steep.
