Good footage RA.
I traveled with my Dad and saw the Antar road trains from Alice to Darwin and the enormous Rottinoff beef trains out of Vestys at Wyndam.
He used to say 'Look for the white German Shepherds they trained to drive them' .
I never saw one !!!

Stan,
some pretty heavy weight names you have reflected on.

Some great Australia builders. The Leylands, Scammells, Thornycrofts and later the Diamond Reos, Commer knockers, 1418 Benz's, Bedfords, Inters and so on.

It was great to see Toots smiling in the vid as I can remember that infectious smile well. Hard one minute and laughing the next.

Brings back memories of watching the old trucks cart stuff up through Mt Beauty to the Kiewa scheme in the late 40's. We could always get a ride up and back also. We were 4-6 years old than and fascinated by it all.

What was the blockade of?

Got a few chills when Toots appeared. I read a lot about her in preparation for our Cape York family trip.

The trains struck a nerve also. Remended me of the times when we used to get a cab ride in the 38's and 36's between Culcairn and either Albbury or Wagga.

Even though I wasn't driving that long ago this was one the best memory shakers for ages.

Thanks mate

Phil

Phil,
most of it was to do with the payment of road tax. Many good innocent owners and fathers went to jail for non payment which in turn really hurt their families and they lost their trucks because they could.t pay the tax.

I remember Doug t doing a Sunday history lesson on it. May be under Razorback or truck blockade.

Fascinating. Enjoyed the Videos. I visited the Transport in Alice Springs recently and was intrigued by the history of road trains and especially the very old one there, which was a cross between a truck and a tractor and towed several "tracking" trailers. I understood it was made in England?? However this is the earliest reference I can find to an Australian built road train, (Its part way thru the article ) By the way this magazine has good archives and each issue has an interesting feature on old tractors etc, well worth reading for those of us who enjoy remembering the old days of our fathers and grandfathers.

Thanks RA, good video.

Those old Fodens would have been Wright's Transport, from the Isa. Made all their own crates, and painted 'em red and white.

That Diamond Reo(???) body truck, towing all those dog trailers, would make these modern quads look like a Tonka Toy too, eh.

Great to see this history preserved, for all to appreciate.

Bob.
Seen it all, Done it all.
Can't remember most of it.
