G'day Russell,
I always tend to keep an open mind and decide for myself. I've been to lots of places over the years that other people told me not to visit. I stayed at "The Park" (in Paget) for a few days in 2011. It's a nice park and we thought that Mackay was a nice place. Going there again next year. Take the kids to the sugar mill in Sarina.
Cheers, Bob

Gday Bob
Wouldnt they be better off going to the distillery in Sarina with the kids?

I have stayed at both Andergrove (north side) and The Park (on the south side on the edge of town) and can recommend both. There are another two that have been upgraded in the last few years that get good reviews. Seawinds Caravan & Holiday Park, up on the northern beaches was run down an nearly went to housing. It is now a decent looking park after being rebuilt. The one out near the harbour that was a ferals haunt has been cleaned up and is now part of the Big4 chain.

Peter,
they have cleaned up the harbour van park but it is still average.

One to really stay away from is central van park.

I recommended Andergrove as it is very central to town and the beaches. It is also a very easy park to enter. About 5 mins to town and 7 mins to harbour beach. It is also not far from Slade point and Lamberts beach and not far from the northern beaches road.

Paget is getting very busy and the industrial estate behind The Park is hugh. Saying that, The industrial area doesn't intrude on the park at all.

Juts don't turn up anywhere in Mackay and expect to find accomodation without prior arrangement.

Quite often the town will be chock an block.

The youth camp near the dam up at Proserpine has some powered & unpowered sites that can be available when not otherwise booked.

One of the dams west of Mackay...serioulsy not far..has a caravan park with some sites right on the waters edge....when I say waters edge, I mean check ya handbrake & wheel chocks.

There is a private camping area west of Mcakay on the road into the falls( name illudes )...have not looked at it.....the swimmimg at the falls on a hot day is a wonderfull thing and worth the walk.

But you realy need to book in advance or be prepared to keep driving and quite some way.

cheers
