Tuck - I was in Maytown back in August and gotta say it was certainly well worth the visit. I entered from Chillagoe via Mt Mulgrave Stn and the Palmerville Station. You have to drive past the Palmerville Stn outstation across the Palmer River and about 5 km further north there is a new road into Maytown. There was some "excitement" when we were up there and subsequently the Station owner and his wife have been arrested and charge with murder (I don't know what the current status of that issue is).

You don't need a permit to drive through the area but you do need a permit to camp anywhere in the Palmer Goldfields Reserve. That said, none of the locals bother with permits but I figure a few bucks is not going to break me. There are no facilities at any of the designated camping areas. We camped at Dog Leg Crossing for a couple of days and did day trips to the various ruin sites.

Be careful where you venture as much of the surrounding area is under current mining leases and some of the prospectors get a little narky when you go on their lease. Others are only too happy to have a chat. Whatever you do DO NOT take a metal detector with you...or if you do....don't take it out of the car.

You can read more about the permit/camping requirements here: http://www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/parks/palmer-goldfield/camping.html

I went to Maytown in November, we went from the Whites Creek turnoff on the PDR about 17km before Palmer River Roadhouse.
The road is an 80km formed up superhighway to the Palmer River crossing, some mild bulldust and steep climbs (2nd gear and not towing anything) and great scenery. From there the tracks are untouched so it is slow going into Maytown itself (about 10 km) and the various old stampers and mines.
We had intended to camp on the Palmer crossing but it was dry except for one large slimy waterhole so we left on the same day.
I reckon in June it would be great.
Actually in June this year I went to Mt Mulligan via Dimbulah visiting Thornborough and the Tyrconnell mine and working stamper. You can camp at the weir below the escarpment on Mt Mulligan Station for $10 per head, showers etc. From there it is a few minutes away to explore the old Mt Mulligan township and coal mine.
From Mt Mulligan you can drive through Kondaparinka to rejoin the PDR north of Mt Carbine and so on to Maytown. That would make a great trek.

Got carried away there, I forgot your other questions.
About four years ago my brother with camper trailer and me camping under a tarp which I prefer turned up at Weipa caravan park unannounced and had no trouble finding a spot even though I was looking for a couple of trees for my tarp. It was June /July and packed out too. If you need a powered site it may pay to book ahead.
As for the Tip, your ferry fee entitles you to camp in the area at places such as Mutee Heads, Somerset or the Jardine Mouth.
There is a paid camp at Seisia if you want to be handy to the jetty for fishing or trips to T.I. on the ferry. It can be crowded there. Umagico has a camp ground on the beachfront if you want to be away from the bustle of Seisia. And then there is Loyalty Beach just up from Seisia and 3 or 4 km away by road, and further away if you really want to be away from it all is Punsand Bay. You turn off at the croc tent on the way to the tip.

Re Weipa, I'm not sure if its changed, but it was classified as a campground and not a caravan park, so I don't think you can book sites. Its more like, just find somewhere. Also depending on how busy they are, you may not get power as they did have many campers connecting to a few poles when we visited. It's not like there's one pole per camper available.

New management at the Weipa Campground and with effect 2012 bookings are now required in advance of your arrival. They have marked out the are fully now and while you may get a spot in the unpowered area at late notice, getting a powered spot would be unlikely. I think they even have an on line booking facility now.

Extract from their website: ".. from April 2012 bookings will be required for all types of accommodation. In order to not miss out and due the high demand for both camping and cabins we strongly encourage you to book prior to your travel."
