Does anyone know if there is some type of device that can be attached to a trailer, regardless what type, that actually measures distance that the trailer has done?
Was thinking it could be handy by just glancing at the think to know what maintenance might be due, how long tyres have lasted, etc. Yes I realise one could just keep records of trips through the towing vehicles speedo, but I have a habit if missfiling after each trip.

You need a Hubodometer. Google it for a number of sites.
Here is one to start Hubodometer where someone asked the same question as you.

That would be it. Did not know what they might have been called. I did do a search earlier, but all I came up with was the American variety, which was all in miles.

Trailers are one item that often don't suit doing maintenance by the KM as they can sit idle for along time. That said we've run hub meters on semi trailers which are doing large KM's behind various trucks so hard to keep track.

Yeh hub meters are very common in heavy transport.

But for domestic trailers there realy is not much maintenence that is realy milage related.

wheel bearings for instance ....I'd be more concerned at how many water crossing than how many Km.......one of my trailers I have not repacked or adjusted the bearings for over 20 years.....done plenty of KM.....no play, spin smooth.....no problem.
My boat trailer on the other hand gets repacked every year.

Adjustment of brakes, realy depends on what you are doing.....one trip in mountainous terain could put more wear on your brakes than years of flat highway work.

As for tyres......very few people manage to actually wear out tyres on a trailer, before they should be replaced due to age...consider that most tow vehicles can manage at least 50 000 out of tyres if properly managed..and those tyres are steering and driving.

How many people can manage to put 50 000Km on a trailer tyres.

Most maintenence issues on trailers realy need to be done on inspection, the less they are used the more they need inspecting

cheers

Sounds like a gadget, that is not really worth while in getting. Just look at the tralier every now and then. lol\

I guess realistically there is not a lot of scedule maintanece involved with trailers. Just common sence.

Thanks for the replies.
