Hi all,

Hope you are enjoying Xmas.
I am posting for a friend.

He is keen on getting a Oztent Rv4 to go on top of his Mazda 3 car (hatchback) and build a tray to support the Oztent on roof rack.

I thought it was not ideal to do this especially when Oztent Rv4 is 2m long.

Can anyone here give out advice if it is still okay to have Oztent Rv4 on top of Mazda 3 car?

Many thanks!

That's a bit of an oddball way to go. It's going to be a bit of a problem to erect, expensive to make the platform to mount it on and best of luck in high wind. You can get a better model for much the same price from Austrack Campers. Then you can get annex walls to make a living section at ground level.

Thanks Nomadic Navara.

Opps, I didn't explain it properly in my post and I apologise.

I mean if packed Oztent Rv4 can fit on roof rack of car like Mazda 3 while travelling and when camping, it will come off to set up to go on ground.

Just concerned that 2m long Oztent Rv4 is too long for a small car like Mazda 3?

Hi Timmy

There will be no need to build a tray, as the internal frame will keep the tent in one shape and support it while on the roof.

They are a great tent and so easy to erect. We have the RV4 and add a few extras for extended stays.

Cheers

Hi Timmy,if he fits a roof rack he should be ok. Maybe get one custom made to hang out over back window /boot ect. Would not need to be heavy duty as tent only weights 19 kg.Cost may be prohibitive.

I can't really see a problem beyond a packed RV4 is nearly as long as a Mazda 3!!

The frame of the tent should support it on the roof racks. It's not as if the Mazda will be travelling on corrugations or anything like that.

Good luck I say,

Great tent too, I have one.

As you have already been correctly advised, you should not have any problems carrying the RV4 on the roof. The internal frame will make it easy for you. You may however like to consider the 'Ozpod', a fibreglass carrier which tidies things up a bit more.

I have an RV4 with the add ons and it's a terrific tent. You'll enjoy yours, and the Oztent crew are very good if you ever need any help.

Just have the oztent in the bag that it came with . Have a seperate bag for the pegs poles . It cuts the weight down . If he wants the extras like the peaked side panels and front then just do what i did . Buy a seperate duffle bag and put the folded panels in there . Put the duffle bag inside the car . I have 2 small bags , one for all the pegs and 1 for all the ropes . Anyone who has tried to put the peaked side panels into the origainal bags will know how much of a pain it is . Now i just stuff them in the duffle bag . I use the extra large oztrail bag .

Timmy..

Your friend won’t have any problems carrying an Oztent on either a roofrack or two roofbars.

We’ve carried our 17 year old Oztent on both - the first ten years on two roofbars on two different vehicles.
In recent years the tent has been carried on a short roofrack - still with overhang each end.

I’ve found two ‘zippy straps’, about 1.5 metres long are ideal to tie it on.

The tent in its bag overhangs the bars at either end, but even on the most indifferent ‘roads’ (many of them better suited to using a 4WD than a conventional car) - there’s never been a problem.

Two tips I would offer..

Put the tent on the roof with the closed end to the front
If the zip closure end is at the front water can drive into the bag if it’s raining.

The handles on the bag need to be tied up so they don’t flap. Leave them lose and they make an incredible din drumming on the roof.
I use the free ends of the two ‘zippy straps’ to secure the bag handles.

Jim
